Random Realization...anyone else?

H just went on a backpacking trip with one of his best friends, and I'm alone for a few days (yay quiet me time!)

Now, I love to cook. I'm veg and I do the cooking, and DH eats whatever I cook with great pleasure, and no particulars.  I cook all kinds of fun stuff that many of his college friends would be like "whaaaa??? This isn't a meal."   But he loves it all.  And we both love to eat; maybe me even more than him!  So it's not like we're not used to "odd" or non-traditional eating in our house.

But on the odd occasion he's out of town without me, I do weird things like eat cereal for dinner or just crackers and cheese...which, for all the unique things I cook, I would never do when he's here. It literally just dawned on me that I don't eat the same when he's gone.

I just find when cooking for only me, I don't care as much as when there are two people to feed.  The prospect of cooking a creative meal from scratch seems...too strenuous all of a sudden hahahaha

My question for you ladies is: Do you eat differently when your DH is not around?

Anyone else? Anyone?? :-)

Re: Random Realization...anyone else?

  • My thing is funny... I love love love to cook! But I cook all meat meals for DH and I am a veg. I make him meals for everyday lunch and dinner.

Me I eat whatever is laying around, all snack type foods...

    Have fun relaxing alone.

  • I definitely do this. I'll cook for the two of us and it's anything from an elaborate Sunday dinner to a weekday fridge-clearing stir fry. But if I'm flying solo I'll eat like a bowl of dry cereal for dinner, or have ice cream for breakfast or act like I'm 4 without adult supervision.

  • Yes! We both eat pretty much anything and cook a lot. We have different eating styles (he likes things creamy, I prefer to eat lighter with more veggies), but we're slowly discovering common ground. When DH isn't around I will usually just snack on food and not have a real meal. Sometimes I'll buy or cook food that he's not much of a fan of. I'm pretty sure he does the same when I'm not there.

branz - Cheese and crackers have definitely made a fine dinner for me plenty of times when DH came home late or went away! Love em!

  • I definitely do this.  DH was out of town for 2 1/2 months this summer for an internship (he came home last week and I am thrilled!!!)

I had a difficult time figuring out how to cook for myself at first.  It was very different for me not cooking elaborate meals, but it worked out.  I found myself eating breakfast for dinner at least once a week.  It took a lot of getting used to, but definitely take the time while your H is away to eat what you want, even if you are just snacking on whatever is around the house...

    -this.  :)

DH went away for a couple of weeks last month, and I just lived on Japanese noodles and vegetarian chicken patties, and Ice-cream.

And I'm Veg too!!  Go us!!

  • I'm the exact same way. I'll eat leftovers (from when he was home) for breakfast, or some weird non-cooking concoction for dinner. I'm also like, eat a whole bag of chips or three candy bars or stuff that I would never eat when he's home. Not that he ever gives me a hard time or anything, but I wouldn't eat like that with him here.

    This exactly!!

  • haha These replies make me laugh.  I love the thought of women all across the world eating all manner of cr@p the second their DH's walk out the door.

It's like, "He's gone!  Grab the secret chip stash!" hehehe

And I agree it's not like I wouldn't eat something like three candy bars in front of my H, as a pp said, it's just...different! :-)

LOVEIT.  Thanks ladies, I'm thinking endless bruschetta or a giant vat of guac n chips for dinner...votes??

  • DH and I usually don't spend much time apart... but in the times that we do I completely agree with you guys.  Who wants to cook an actual meal for only one??  I am more likely to eat out or order a pizza (and then eat pizza for breakfast, lunch, and dinner haha!)

  • I totally eat differently.  DH is the one cooking in our house - he really enjoys it and working from home gives him the time to do it too. When he is not around, I eat frozen meals, or whatever he left over...

  • We both love to cook, and eat great things when we are together.  But if either of us is away, the one who is alone just eats junk food for dinner.  It's just not worth the cooking and the cleanup, and it's hard to get motivated!

  • I might be in the minority, but when DH is gone, I like to eat things that he won't eat.  This includes a lot of veggies, shrimp, tofu, and lots of different kinds of fish.  So I guess that I tend to eat a bit "better" when DH is gone in that a lot of the things he won't eat tend to be a bit more expensive; but it is cheaper to buy them for just 1 person!

I thought I would be this way, but I'm definitely not. If I were single I'd probably eat better than DH and I do (and we don't eat too badly) because I'd eat way less red meat and carbs. But when he's gone I definitely eat like I did in college, just grabbing whatever random snacky food I feel like. The other night he was out with a friend and I had black beans on toast, crackers with onion dip, and cheese puffs. It was delicious but ridiculous. Good thing it doesn't happen often.
