So I called the Sheriff today
S bug and I went for a walk last night and there were some transients were on the corner of our street in the grassy area that marks the start of our subdivision. When I went back to work after lunch they were still there and when I came home they were still there too. So I called and then we went on a walk with S bug and came back that way and they were still there. Sheriff called and said he can't find them where I said they were so he came by the house and asked me about it and said that they have a transient patrol and he will put that spot on the list and keep an eye on it himself. E actually wasn't opposed to me calling which was nice too. I really hope this keeps the riffraff off our street.

Re: So I called the Sheriff today
Yeah it was weird. They also had a dog with them that didn't appear to be a very nice dog and it makes me nervous because between the 5 houses on our street we have 4 little boys, 3 of which are walking and playing outside a lot and it just makes me nervous.
The Sheriff Department will keep getting phone calls from me when there is weird stuff happens or there are strange people out because I want our street to remain safe for the little boys and for our future children.
We are trying. Most often its nothing but sometimes it just weird and creepy.
I'm sorry, don't think I was laughing at you. I just find that word funny.
Sounds very scary. I would have called the cops too. Stay safe!
They're scouting the houses to nail down your routine, so they know the best time to rob your house.
People sit around b/c they very likely have nowhere else to go. It's really not difficult to understand. I get how you might not want a strung out junkie in your neighborhood, but the presence of poor people isn't proof of immediate danger.
Use the Aladdin example. He was a good guy, but poor. Someone sitting in some shade in the grass may be poor but not automatically trying to go after your children or preshus possessions.
While that may be true, she has all the right in the world to report people who trespass onto her property or who she feels may be in the subdivision without just cause. I'm assuming they pay homeowner's association fees to live in that subdivision and part of that fee goes to neighborhood upkeep. She should feel a general sense of security in her own home, and if she doesn't then she may exercise her right to call the police. They are there to serve and protect the public, after all. It is not her responsibility to approach the transients and ask if they "live around here," but rather that of the police.
If a couple random people were just hanging out at all hours a couple houses down from me you bet I would be calling it in.
I'm sorry you find my thread as something to side-eye but since we have moved here there as been somethings that make me uncomfortable, this is only time that I have called the sheriff and honestly I'm glad I did. Our subdivision faces a very public street and I have seen one other person sleeping in the grassy area, as well as some other people there during the day. I don't want the place we live and actually do love to become a transient camp. But honestly if they had just been there for a few hours I won't have cared or called because it is a very nice shady spot to sit. It is the fact that they were there for a 24 hour period. And my husband actually let me call the sheriff and if he had felt I was being ridiculous he would have told me so, and I probably wouldn't have called.
I just want to preserve the fact that for the most part we live in a safe place. And that is not saying that the people yesterday were bad people, but if they start camping out there that will just lead to more people and not all of those people will be good people.
And I'm more worried about the kids them my possessions, the little boys on our street are super sweet and trusting and will talk to anyone. Other than a few small sentimental things, nothing we own is so important that it can't be easily replaced.
And now I have no idea why I had to justify why I called but I did anyways. Oh well.
Of course they could be perfectly nice people who have had some crappy luck in their lives and are just trying to find a place to rest, and that sucks; it really does. However, A is also perfectly within her rights to let the authorities know if people are trespassing, especially considering some of the sketchiness going on already.
I agree that's part of it. Odd people loitering where they have no business is never a good thing. I wouldn't be too happy about the dog either. Stay alert and stay safe.
I wouldn't want my property becoming a camp, either. It's not the action you took that seemed off. It's more the way people are describing it, especially making the assumption that they're there to steal. I wasn't going to say anything until that post.
Also, my husband doesn't "let" me do anything, so that's another thing that gets my hackles up.
I'm probably a bit touchy about this since I live in a place with a very large homeless population, and I have heard pretty darn offensive statements from the very people who are supposed to be working on a solution. One even compared a homeless cleanup to taking out the trash before you have guests.
I agree with you on this. I know that if I didn't live anywhere, hadn't eaten in a while and had little water available to me, I would probably stay in one place for a while too. I think that the general assumption that homeless people are criminals is sad, and completely wrong. What happened to "innocent until proven guilty"? It is great to protect yourself, I don't mind that either, sometimes you just have to do what you have to do. And I know that I get nervous around people that I really don't know who don't "look good". So I am kind of talking to myself here too.
Sibil, your last sentence makes me really angry. Just because someone is homeless doesn't make them any less human. How do our leaders not understand this?
Amen. Way to stick it to the downtrodden and unfortunate.Douche.
I can't say for sure where other people were going with this so I'll just speak for myself.
I get really touchy about people stealing and/or vandalizing other people's things. I am by nature a paranoid person and I am always on the look out for things that "don't seem right" or that pose a potential problem.
For me it's not
a.) they're looking to break into someone's house
because
b.) they're homeless
It's
a.) they're looking to break into someone's house
because
c.) I haven't come up with a reason to believe that their intentions are benign yet
Then again, I'm also the kind of person who watches people walk their dogs. Not because I think oh how cute a doggie, but because I want to see if they intend to pick up the dog's poop.
