New Orleans Recs?

I know a number of you ladies have been there before - hoping you can give me some ideas.  DH and I are planning some vacations and one things we're thinking of is a long weekend in NOLA in November.  What should we not miss?  Where should we eat?

We're just beginning to research but one hotel my sister suggested is the Royal Sonesta - so we're thinking about that place.

Re: New Orleans Recs?

  • It depends on what you're going there for.  Do you want to be near the drinks or relax?
  • Mostly see sights and relax.  I like to eat  - DH would eat the same thing everyday and not care.  He'd prefer more local or very 'new orleans' type places rather than big fancy famous chef type places.

We aren't big drinkers but I imagine we might go out and get one after dinner or something.

  • I went during college spring break and stayed with friends, and it was pre-Katrina, so my recs aren't really helpful for what you're looking for... but I will tell you that I watch a whole lot of Food Network, and one place they are always featuring is Mother's Restaurant.  It's supposed to be a local treasure.  Might be fun to make a trip!

You could always get in touch with ulkaydee if she doesn't pop into this post-- she lives there! :)

  • Um, Megan. I would like to meet you and little miss Jane. :) I live 30 min away from Nola. The Royal Sonesta is one of my favs if not my favorite hotel. I love the location and such. Irene's on Chartes is supposed to be phenomenal. Galatoires, Besh Steakhouse, Gumbo Shop in the quarter - mom recommends sauteed shrimp po boy. Brennan's, Court of Two Sisters- Sunday Jazz Brunch is awesome, etc. :)
  • For me, no trip to Nola is complete without a muffaletta from Central Grocery.  :)  Have fun!

I second that. And a burger and drink from Port o Call.
  • Nice!  Thanks for the suggestions all.  I'm glad to hear you've heard of that hotel, too.  It looked really nice to me - and obviously centrally located.  I'll let you know if we're definitely coming though this would be a no-Janie trip :)
  • I thought about that after I posted. aka after a large margarita at dinner. :)

It is a good location- very pretty and centrally located.

  • For food, I would rec Drago's, Pat O'Brien's and Embers Steakhouse.

For sights, I would definitely rec a city tour.

Also, I have always stayed at the JW Marriott on Canal.  It's close to everything, but not right on Bourbon so you're a couple blocks away from the noise.  The Royal Sonesta looks beautiful from the outside though.

  • Please don't forget to have a beignet at Cafe DuMonde & people watch in Jackson Square!
