Hi Ladies
We are currently stationed at Yokota AFB (Japan) and will be PCSing to McGuire in the spring. Anyone stationed there? Any tips for us? We don't want to buy, just rent a place. I have a 2 year old so I'd love to get her in a preschool, and she could possibly start kindergarten there, so school districts will be important too. I'm excited to move back stateside, but it is hard to figure things out from over here! Thanks for your help!
Re: McGuire
Welcome! We just moved to New Jersey a few months ago. So far I absolutely love it here. I don't know how away you want to live from base, but there isn't really that much around base besides a few small towns and farmland. Most of the people in DH's flight live either on the shore or in Philly. We live closer to Philly. But, I've heard that base housing is nice.
Does your H have a sponsor yet? I know that I got a ton of help from them as far as good ideas on where to live, they were great. Also, check out AHRN.com to find rental houses. You will be able to see what the rent goes for around here and maybe what town you would like to live in.
Welcome! I'm J, I live just south of McGuire/Dix. My H is a reservist with the Army. We have a 2 month old daughter and 2 cats.
Housing on post is newer and very nice but I'm not sure what the school districts are like in the area immediately off of post. There is a lot of construction happening on post right now since it's became a joint base. It's an older base but I anticipate there being tons of improvements in the next few years due to the merger. There are certain towns you'll want to avoid when renting Lumberton, Pemberton and Wrightstown are not that great and are also immediately off post. Mt. Laurel, Moorestown, Marlton and Cherry Hill are very nice and have good school districts but further out and pretty expensive. We live in central Camden County and have a reasonably priced town house, a good school district and the commute to post isn't terrible (about 40 minutes).
The area as a whole is great. You're 30 minutes (from post) away from Philadelphia, an hour ride away from the beach, an hour and a half ride away from the mountains, a short train ride up to NYC, a 2 hour drive to Baltimore/DC. There are a lot of wineries popping up and so many awesome restaurants.
Feel free to ask me any other questions you may have about the area.
