new home.. ugly bathroom

my husband and i are in the process of buying this wonderful house its perfect for us and the LO. but the tile in the bathroom are like mauve and baby blue. we cant really afford a whole bathroom renovation cause the house needs a roof and a few other "more important" as my husband says, things so we can move in. any ideas how i can make the most out of this tacky, dated bathroom without spending a whole lot?

  • They make enamel for tile that you just paint on.  There are also companies that will come paint your tile for you and guarantee the work for 5-15 years.

You should also check out the Decorating & Renovating board.

  • Rustolem (SP?) makes a product specifically for tile in bathrooms. ?I've heard good things about it. I think the kit is like $75 and you'd probably have to buy 2. ?Or... just wait it out and start saving.

  • Can you post a pic?  I'd love to see what you're working with.

If the tile is flat and laid well you could possibly buy inexpensive ceramic tile and just go right over it. But if its poorly laid, uneven, or has cracks it might not work. Is it just on the ground or around the tub too? Is tile your only problem with the bath?

You can also use boat paint to paint over tile. My mom did that in a house that had a bathroom with brown tile on the floor, shower, and walls. The paint thing is a good option if there is a ton of tile and difficult to redo. Plus its relatively quick and easy.

  • Talk to a pro about getting it covered.  We had a tub that we had sprayed to change the color after a home kit went wrong (and I'm handy and crafty, and followed the directions).
  • Honestly, if you can find a nice shower curtain and get a really good paint color, you could probably make it work. Check out Target, you really might be surprised at how you can make it work until you'd be able to afford to remodel. Our entire bathroom is yellow, yellow tile, tub, cabinet, walls...everything. We changed out what we can cheaply do and decorated it to make it work well enough for now. Granted yellow is easier than mauve and blue. Post some pics, maybe we can help!
  • Apartment Therapy has had some good before/after posts about tile painting.
    Hope is not a strategy.

This one is kitchen tile, but I think it's a good example of a B/A.

    Wow, that's impressive!

  • You already got good advice, and probably better than what I can provide.  But our one bathroom has really ugly tile too.  And the previous owners painted the room a color that looked HORRIBLE w/ it.

We painted it a very neutral color and I shockingly found a shower curtain at Target that had all the same colors in it but a little more muted.  Now- you don't even notice the tile!
