Not how I expected...

this weekend to turn out.

Sam had yesterday off so we started the weekend out by running a bunch of errands.  We got home from grocery shopping and I was putting the groceries away and I stepped on a spot in the kitchen floor and heard a strange noise.  I look down and realize that the noise is water squishing out from around the boards of the laminate flooring...great, we have a leak somewhere.

Turns out that one of the dishwasher lines had worked itself loose and was leaking all the time, not just when it was running.

Sam called our home-owners insurance right away and they said an adjuster would be calling us withing 24-48 hours.  I expected that to mean that we would hear from them on Tuesday, since this is a holiday weekend and all.  We actually did get a call from them today and the insurance is going to cover this.  Yeah!  The adjuster said that he would have a local company give us a call to set up the repairs.  I again expected this to take until Tuesday.  About 10 minutes after the call from the adjuster we got a call from the company that got our address and said they would be out to check things out within a couple of hours.  I was shocked that all of this was happening so quickly!

The repair company came out and tested the floor for moisture and sure enough, there was water under there.  So they ripped up the flooring in the kitchen so that things could start to dry out.  Luckily, it doesn't look like the floor or sub-floor are going to have to be replaced, but we'll know more when they come back on Tuesday.

So I now have a kitchen with no flooring, a giant de-humidifier, and two industrial fans going in my kitchen.

I would be excited about new flooring in the kitchen, but we had just put the flooring in about 4 years ago and I really liked it!  Hopefully they will find something very comparable.  I'm trying to look on the bright side and be glad that the insurance is actually paying for this and that it's happening quickly.

  • I am glad that things moved quickly for you and yay for home owners insurance, but what a crappy start to your weekend.   Good luck getting a new floor.

  • Being an adult is rough sometimes. Glad to hear the insurance is getting things done quickly though. Hope you get a nice replacement flooring.
  • This happened to us in 2009.  Hose to the dishwasher burst.  Water everywhere.

Thankfully, it sounds like your damage will be limited.  If you have a basement or area below the kitchen, make sure that they test the ceiling for moisture and don't forget to check out your cabinets around the dishwasher.

When they replace the hose for the dishwasher - they sell a special (more expensive ~$20, but so worth it) hose for the dishwasher that is supposed to shut off if it loses pressure.  You may want to get one of those.  (They make them for the washing machine as well.)

Good luck!  I hope that they get everything dried quickly with no mold or other setbacks.
