Are you back yet from your trip?  I wanted to ask you, have you ever been on a Princess cruise?  If we can convince MIL that a cruise would be fun, FIL will pay for us to go on one before a family wedding next June.  H wants to cruise Princess, but I wanted to cruise Disney.  Obviously FIL has ultimate say, just wondering how Princess was.

  • Got back last night :)..... we haven't done Princess yet, but I have heard really good things about them. You know I'm all about Disney, but I would actually choose Princess over a Disney cruise. I'm all about trying different cruise lines, AND I think a cruise is more about the itinerary, unless there are a million sea days. Unless you have kids, a Disney cruise isn't like Disney World. Everything is more for kids and while there ARE adult areas and what not, I would just choose another line over them until you have kids. I'm also a big gambler on cruises and Disney doesn't have a casino.... at least on their older ships don't, not sure about their newer ones. Where are you cruising to? Cruises are so fun!

  • Thanks for the info!  We're cruising Alaska because H's BFF is getting married there.  I think we'll probably start in California and cruise up, do the wedding, then fly back.  Not sure, it's all still up in the air.

  • Oh that sounds amazing! We cruised Holland America in Europe and they are huge in Alaska. We met a ton of people who have cruised them in Alaska and just raved about it.

  • I'm anxious to see what you thought of the line.

I've done 10 cruises on HAL -- never to Alaska, though -- 5 Eastern Canada/New England (my all-time favorite cruise!), 3 Caribbean (I can take or leave this area; I don't like beaches or hot, humid, tropical weather), 1 to the Baltic (a dream come true), and 1 Circle Hawaii (never again: 9 days at sea was 7 days too many).  I am not one to tell everyone they'll love HAL, and I know the reputation of the ships being floating nursing homes (one cruise was wall to wall people with walkers/scooters and I got really tired of having my feet run over by people who can't drive their scooters), but I'm interested in hearing the honest opinions of people who have cruised on other lines.  My travel agent, who has been a family friend for years, knows us well enough to be able to tell us we would not be happy on another line, and I trust that advice.  But I like to see how others view the line, after they have experienced it.

  • We liked HAL a lot! We would cruise them again, but would also cruise other lines as well. I compared it most to our last cruise which was Carnival, and HAL is viewed as a much higher class line so I went into it thinking that, which overall sort of disappointed me.

I did like that the crowd was older. It was quiet at night and not a party atmosphere which I loved. I didn't see any people in wheel chairs which I was expecting to after hearing all about it LOL!

One of the things we hate on Carnival are the constant announcements and activities, HAL had much less which we appreciated and enjoyed.

Loved the ships decor and we took advantage of the thermal suite package for the entire cruise which was great!

I liked the food, but I thought it was very comparable to Carnival's food. We loved our room {aft balcony} but preferred the bedding on our last cruise over HAL's. Our balcony was wonderful though - very private and spacious, and the size of the room was great.

We were a little upset on how the as you wish dining worked. We had to make reservations days in advance which sort of ruined the eat whenever you want thing. Again, just comparing it to our last cruise when we did the your time dining and was able to go whenever, always get a table for 2 and never had to wait. On HAL, even the reservation line was HUGE.

I'm not judging the line based on this, I think it was just our particular cruise - a hit or miss type of thing, but the staff seemed to be bothered any time we asked them for something, but whatever.

We had a good time and cruise base on itinerary, so overall we loved it.

  • Thanks for your thoughts.  I agree on the as you wish dining; the one time I have used it, I had problems getting reservations and thought having to make reservations kind of goes against the idea of "as you wish."  I ended up in the Lido most nights, and that was a big disappointment to me, as I really enjoy table service in the dining room.
