s/o vacations...a would you rather question

Would you rather go on many trips over the years or save for one fabulous, dream vacation for a long while?

Re: s/o vacations...a would you rather question

  • I'd rather go on many trips.  My dream vacation would be Fiji, but it would cost soooo much to go there.  I am hoping that for our 25 year anniversary we can save to go there.

DH and I have made a point to travel a ton, but it has been on a budget.  We went on several vacations where we had lodging with family/friends.  The only time we really splurged was when we went to Alaska this July.

I'd rather see a bunch of different places and have that relaxing time with DH than skip them for years to take one big trip.

  • Such a tough question! I'd rather do little trips (overnights and staying with family) in order to save for bigger trips every few years.

    This is us!

I would rather do small, local trips and save.  My goal is for us to go back to Hawaii for our 10 year anniversary.  We went to Oahu and the Big Island for our honeymoon and had an amazing time.  I would love to see the Big Island again and Kauai and possibly Maui.

  • I would rather do smaller trips, like weekend trips and week long road trips, camping, etc. And try to save a little bit over a long period of time for a larger trip. Once we buy a house that's what I'm hoping to do.
  • Can I pick both? I'd ideally like to do a bigger trip every few years, but with a few short trips in between. We'd definitely like to do Europe before we have kids, but I'm not sure if that will happen.

I want to pick in between too!  I guess it really depends on your definition of a BIG trip.  If we're talking like across an ocean, then I think that's worth saving for.  There are just so many places around here to take trips to that I will see those while I'm on a budget and just know I will get to the big ones later on.

  • We've done more trips with family than we have trips with just the two of us- We went to Disney with the in-laws in 2005 (It was a free trip for all of us- it was a sweeps win), to Myrtle Beach with my family in 2007 (we just paid for our one date night on that trip- stayed in my parents' camper), and most recently to DC this summer with my in-laws (paid for by the in-laws bc they wanted one last family trip as his younger brother is now a jr in college- neither us nor his brother/brother's girlfriend would have been able to afford to go this year if we had to pay).  H and I have only taken one trip by ourselves and that was our Honeymoon cruise in 2010.

We like it both ways- we like to have others on our trips for someone else to hang out with and have experiences with, but we also liked the privacy on our honeymoon.  I will say though, this past summer it was nice having our own room in the rental house so we had some privacy- there was no private rooms at all in the RV. The RV was a little tight with 7 people (my parents, us, and my teenage brother and sisters), but that helped us save money on the trip.

  • I choose both too. We like to do little weekend/long weekend trips to just get away and be together but we also want to save for bigger trips every so often too. So ya, I pick both!
