moms of 2+: talk to me about carseat placement

we have dd in a ff carseat in each car, and she sits behind the passenger seat in both cars. i had dh pull out the infant carseat today to see if it will fit since putting it in the middle is not an option anymore.

the only way the infant seat will fit is if dd is moved to the driver's side in both cars. this bothers me a bit for 2 reasons - 1: i like to be able to see dd and 2: dd tends to kick a lot, which is distracting enough when you aren't driving.

so where are carseats placed in your car?

Re: moms of 2+: talk to me about carseat placement

  • We have the rfing seat behind the passenger. It allows the driver a lot more room.  With 2 in the back I can ask O what his sister is doing and he can hand things to her if needed.
  • DD is behind the passenger, DS behind the driver. This was because DD was RFing until 3.5yo and I needed more space for her RFing radian than for the infant. But I also had a baby trend flex loc infant seat which is the shortest one I could find.

Now that DD is FFing, I like having her behind the passenger because I can pass things back to her easier. But sometimes she insists that she wants to sit in the 3rd row, so at times we are all 3 in a row front to back.

I have seat mirrors for RFing and the extra mirror up front for seeing FFing.

If your seats only fit one way, then that's the way it is. Get the mirror on the windshield so you can see her and try to teach her not to kick.

  • I only have 1 but this is sort of relevant.  M's booster sits better on the side than in the middle because I have sort of bucket seats in the back.  So M sits behind me.  I can see her easily in my rear view mirror.  So when R sits behind you she should be fine - I would feel better about that than R behind the passenger and the baby behind me where I couldn't reach over with a bottle or paci or anything.

  • DS is currently behind the passenger seat, we will move him to behind the driver when the baby comes.  It is more convenient to have the baby behind the passenger than behind the driver, IMO.

  • Luca sits on the passenger side and Lila sits on the driver side.  I had a mirror so I could see her as an infant rear facing.  Since Luca was forward facing, I could already see him.  Also, I'm short, so we needed the leg room on the passenger side.  My kids know are very particular about where they sit.
  • My older son is behind the passenger with the baby behind the driver. This is my preference because the toddler is always first in, last out. He's too active for me to be comfortable with him walking around the car while I am focused on strapping the baby in. I don't have to run circles around my car getting everyone loaded - it's a natural path from rear passenger to rear driver to driver's seat.

That being said, I'm sure it would be fine the other way! This is just what I'm used to...

  • M is behind the driver & E is behind the passenger (both were RF when E was born).  I've taught Mar to climb in from the front passenger seat into the back so that she can get herself into the carseat while I'm putting E up.  Then, I walk around the car and fasten her in, get in the car myself and we're done.  I don't feel like I'm running around the car seventeen times this way
  • DD#1 is behind the passenger seat and DD#2 is behind the driver's seat.  I've loved this arrangement because I can pop the bucket it/put her in the convertible seat while DD#1 climbs up under the baby's seat and over to her own seat.  I get her buckled in, go around and buckle DD#1 and we're ready to go.
  • I don't have two kids, but I do have two carseats in the car.  I have F in a regular carseat rear facing in the middle and the second carseat is behind the passenger forward facing.
