am i being irresponsible?
Would you let your 3 year old play in the backyard alone? We have a 6' privacy fence with gates that she cannot open. We don't have a playground or anything else for her to fall off. We do have the deck, but if she's on the deck I make sure I'm nearby. If she is going down the stairs, I make her use the stairs in the house. If she's in the backyard, I'm in the basement by a window where I can see her. Is this irresponsible? There are times she wants to be outside when I am doing things inside. I just wonder if the neighbors are giving me the side-eye for letting her run around outside without an adult.
Re: am i being irresponsible?
It's PROBABLY ok, as long as you're watching her pretty closely from inside the house - I just wouldn't feel completely comfortable with it. Granted, we have dogs, and our backyard isn't kid-safe by any means, and we also have one side of our yard completely exposed to the street that goes by that side of the house.
I would say though - if you even REMOTELY have a doubt, then maybe not a good idea until he's a little older, but you know your kid, your yard, and your neighborhood enough to know what the right decision is!
Eh. I think it depends on the area you live in, your neighbors, the child, etc.
My DD is 3 1/2, and I won't let her outside alone. We have a fenced backyard with a playset, and she is always begging to go out there. I'm just not comfortable with it. She knows how to let herself out of the gate, and that kind of freaks me out. Oh, and I have possibly an irrational fear of someone coming into our backyard.
I might just be crazy, but I wouldn't be comfortable with it.
We have a pad lock on our gate...
I have a window right above my sink so I can watch her if she is outside while I do dishes... I really don't prefer this and don't like to leave her out there alone. I'm somewhat okay with her drawing chalk or swinging but she is withing feet of me with the window or screen door open. I'm pretty hyper .... what's sad is I remember playing outside all the time when I was younger. I used to ride my bike to the gas station a mile away. It gives me hives to think about my children doing the same.
