Seven interviews with one company, now crickets

I've been interviewing for the past 2 months with a nationally known salon brand for a new marketing position.  I've had SEVEN, yes 7 interviews for this position.  In my opinion they don't know how to interview/hire people and they don't really know what they're looking for.  It's a mid-level position that they just created.  There wasn't much time between interviews before, some of them just a matter of days.  The last interview was fairly extensive & I had to put together a marketing campaign.  They heavily complimented my proposal & presentation skills.  I thought it went really well, they asked some tough questions & they seemed impressed with my answers.  I sent thank you notes a couple days later.   I made the mistake of not asking when they expected to fill the position.

It's been over two weeks and I haven't heard anything.  I emailed the head person last Thursday to see if they needed anything else from me and when they expected to make a decision.  How long do I wait before I call her or give up hope?

  • I'd wait a week to call if you haven't heard back via e-mail. As far as giving up, don't. Sometimes the hiring/final decision takes awhile due to internal factors outside the control of the people who did the interviewing. FWIW, it took my current employer over a month after my second interview to offer me the job even though they decided to hire me 5 minutes after I left the room. HR dragged the process out for their own reasons, and I had totally given up hope when they finally got in touch again.

I agree with this- I sit outside of our recruiting dept. and half the day I hear them trying to get offers approved by the various chains of command. It gets very frustrating for them, the hiring manager (who wants to get someone in) and most of all the candidates. Hang in there!

  • Decisions can take a while but that doesn't give them an excuse to be rude and not return an email with a basic "we're having continuing conversations here and our timeline for hire has been extended, I'll be back in touch with you as soon as I know more".

I once did several rounds of interviews with a company, to include a "project" that took up several hours of my free time on top of the time/hassle of interviewing.  They then fell off the face of the earth and did not return either the phone call or two emails I sent (after which I gave up).  After that I decided that even if they did contact me with an offer I was no longer interested in the position.  I don't want to work for a company that lacks basic courtesy.

  • It is really frustrating when you get this far in the process and NEVER hear a word back. I understand that recruiters are super busy, and don't have time to respond to everyone who sends in a resume. But seriously when they have you do an entire project, a little courtesy would be nice. Hang in there! Hopefully other things are just holding up the process.

Yes, I felt the same way last year after I interviewed three times with 5 different people. Then they never called and didn't respond to my inquiries about the status.  I too, decided I wouldn't want to work for a company that couldn't bother to contact me after I spent many hours with them.

FWIW, I interviewed for my current position 3 times and it took 3 months between the time of my first interview and when I started the job.

    totally agree!

    OP, good luck!

    7 interviews? this is crazy.:(

I'd give it another 2 weeks and then call them. Surely somebody has to have an answer by then. If they don't, they either haven't made a decision yet or something is crazy. GL.

  • FYI, Google also has a series of 7 interviews in a time span of 3-4 months. I am not kidding because my brother, who is a tech person, had to go through 7 to be a part of Google. It?s normal for many companies to have such a hire practice. From what I know, Google is said to be the best place to work in the world. I assume Google is not stupid enough to do that.
