weight gain... BCP?

OK. I've been steadily losing weight, about 30 lbs total since April. But now, in the past 11 days I've gained 5 lbs. I'm freaking out a little and it's really got me down.

My eating and working out aren't perfect, of course, but honestly it's almost exactly the same now as a month or two ago.  In the past week since I noticed this trend, I have been working on buckling down with my food choices, but it seems like no matter what I do, each day the scale is up another half pound. It's very discouraging.

So the other thought I had was maybe this is related to BCP? I started the pill about 2 months before I started my weight loss, and I stopped taking the pill almost a month ago. (No, we are not TTC.) If this is the culprit, it's kind of weird to me that it waited a few weeks to hit, and then happened all at once. But do you guys think this could be why I'm putting on weight now? Have you lost or gained weight when starting or stopping BC?

If it is the BC, then I can just accept that it's a consequence of the new hormone balance in my body and that's going to have to be ok. I wish I knew when it was going to stop though. And if it's not BC, I don't want to just sit by and wait for the gain to stop if it's my own fault and there's some change I should be making in the meantime.

Re: weight gain... BCP?

  • And I know weight fluctuates, but this has been more than a normal fluctuation. Here is my graph for the past 5 months, you can see it looks out of character. Yes I am a nerd who likes to track in Excel :)

Thanks for any advice. I don't mean to sound whiny, I just needed someone to talk to about this!

  • I would keep an eye on it and call your doctor if the trend continues. I would think it could be BCP, but more importantly, if your intake/exercise haven't changed drastically, then it would be considered unexplained weight gain. Always good to keep an eye on that.

  • I know you said you're not TTC, but since you're off BCP, have you taken an HPT just to confirm that's not it?
  • It's possible it's related to the BCP. It could also be other things: stress, water intake, sodium intake, muscle gain.

The thought crossed my mind. But I've been charting my temperature and as far as I can tell, I haven't even ovulated yet. (nevermind the fact that going on the pill for 6 months was supposed to magically make my body start ovulating regularly, but that's another rant for another day.) If this carries on I might POAS just for peace of mind.
