*Stephie* (or anyone who can recommend a great tile person)
I may be mistaken, but didn't you have a tile person you were recommending not too long ago?
We are getting our kitchen tile done in October (hallelujah!) and I'm starting to shop around. It's not a big space so the tile cost isn't a big deal, but I know installation is probably going to be a killer.
Re: *Stephie* (or anyone who can recommend a great tile person)
Well we got the actual tile from a place out by our house -- Forever Floors. We had it installed by a guy hired by our contractor. But I believe you could also contact him directly:
Noel 214-650-5302.
Sorry, I don't know his last name! He did a great job though and he would be cheap. He did a diamond pattern in our kitchen and some other kind of cool pattern in our shower. He also tiled both bathroom floors and our entry way.

My husband is a sales guy for a commercial flooring company. He can't personally help you, but he knows lots of residential reps/installers in the area. If you would like someone to contact for bids (tile and installation), I would be glad to ask him for contact information.
My two cents...our kitchen is very similar to yours in shape and size. Make sure they lay your tile on the diagonal so it makes your kitchen look bigger!

Diagonal, really? I hadn't thought of that. I was thinking of the larger tiles to open it up. Now, I'm confused.
Stephie - Thank you, I will check them out!
Sara - Yes, absolutely. If he knows anyone off-hand that he would recommend we are open to it. We don't have the tile yet so we are open to purchase it all at once and/or get it ourselves and have someone install it. Either way is fine.
We are willing to pay the price for good installation, just trying to avoid the markup on the Lowe's/Home Depot installation (and I've read that their installers are usually pretty poor).

This is what I want. At least, I think I want that.
My mom works with a lady who's husband does tile. He does an awesome job! He has done 2 bathrooms for my grandma, was the general contractor and did all the tile work when my mom gutted her master bath, tiled her front porch, and is tiling the floor and bath walls in a 2nd bath for her this week. I'd have him do it at my house, but I like the projects and have done it myself.
His work is beautiful, he is a really nice guy, doesn't slack at all, and will not trash your house in the process.

We went back in with larger tile - 18" and looooove it. We just laid ours square though, not diagonal.
Also, Gary will come out and give you a quote. If you tell him what you are looking for, he will bring a sample. If you like it, he will buy it all for you. If not, he will tell you how much he needs/what pieces and you can purchase anything you like.

Yes diagonal! It makes a world of difference. I think our tiles are only 16" though. I can send you a picture or you can see it next weekend.
Also, are you set on tile? Have you thought about travertine?
Michelle - that sounds like what we need.
Sara - No, we haven't ruled anything out at this point. I haven't even gone to look at flooring yet. I will take a look at travertine.
I looked at tile for hours. HOURS. Kind of like invitations. And of course I picked Italian porcelain tile at $7/sq ft. The salesman was overjoyed and said I had great taste. We didn't get that of course. I finally just decided to put down what we chose for the bathrooms everywhere. I don't love it in my kitchen but I literally could not look at tile one more second.
This is where not being a visual person really hurts you. It took me 2 years to decide on wallpaper.

Yeah.... I looked at Lowe's and Home Depot this weekend and I don't have a clue. We will find a quality tile on sale, and definitely won't be putting that much $$ into it... even though it is our home we still view it as an investment property and we want to be able to get our money out of it when we sell.
DH and I are currently in a disagreement over the tile size. I think bigger, he thinks smaller. We may compromise on 14 or 16" tile....and it will be something mostly neutral so we can do a countertop and/or backsplash for color.

Yes, I think the 18" it looks fantastic in big spaces. Mark thinks when its only 3-4 tiles across it will look funny...he has a point. I think we will probably bring home some samples in different sizes and lay them out to get an idea.
I hear you on wanting to finish everything now. We have decided to split ours up as well, flooring and range/microwave in October. Countertops and backsplash in March.
I think I can live with that, though.
