Tournament Recap

So my Karate Tournament was this weekend and sadly I didn't place in any of my events :(

1. Weapons - I'm pretty sure I was in 4th place. There are 5 judges and they take out the high and low. I was tied with another girl who had 22.7 and if there is a tie for my rank they add the high and low back in. So I'm pretty sure I was in 4th which bummed me out. However, I did not forget the kata, like one of the other girls did. However when I watched the video DH made I realized that I missed 2 moves! GAH

2. Empty Hand Kata - I am disappointed I didn't do as well. I think I may have been either 4th or 5th with this one. It was my stronger kata but I have a feeling I scored better on my weapons kata. Hah. If you want to see the video check it out here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SCkVfbYC8o

3. Sparring - This was the event where I snapped. I consider myself a pretty good fighter, and there were only 4 girls total in my sparring division so I had a good chance of placing. Unfortunately, I was disqualified in the 1st round for low kicks. Which obviously I didn't think my kicks were low, but they were. Ironically I scored a point with a high kick to her head, so go figure. DH told me I looked really scary when I was fighting. I'm not sure if I should take that as a complement. heh. Although my dojomate said that the first girl I fought looked intimidated by me. What completely SUCKED was that I was winning when I got disqualified. I don't know if my adrenaline was in overload by the second round but I lost that one as well and finished in 4th place. I got a dinky medal but the black belt that gave it to me told me I was a great fighter and to just work on my kicks. I pretty much ran to the bathroom and broke down. It was not pretty. My Mom was there and my cousin and she told me she was really proud of me.

After thinking about it I've decided that I did really well. I've only been a brown belt for a few months, and I'm pretty sure the other girls in my division have been brown belts for at least a year, so I suppose I should be proud that I could *almost* beat them. Almost.

I'm SO proud of my dojo though, so many of them did AMAZING! Sadly, my own Sensei didn't place in any of his events, which actually made me feel slightly better about myself, hah if that makes any sense.

I'm hoping that the next tournament (which I will be a black belt!! eeeeeeeek) i will be able to learn from this experience. It was a ton of fun and I loved cheering my fellow dojo mates on. :)

Re: Tournament Recap

  • That's sort of a bummer!  But if it was your first tournament, you should be very proud of yourself!
