The Houston Chronicle is having a huge job fair on Oct. 4 that I would like to attend. I live about 4 hours away, but will be moving to Houston no later than February (sooner if I can find a job). Have any of you had any experience or luck with a job fair? What do I need to bring? What can I do to prepare myself?
Re: Job Fairs
Bring lots of resumes, business cards if you have them, and a huge smile and lots of energy. The thing with job fairs is that the company might remember one or two people throughout the day. You have to work really hard to be that person. Dress as sharply as you can, but add a bright colored top or accessory, something that makes you stand out. Carry a portfolio, not a basic folder. Looks mean something at job fairs, you have to be the top of the pile immediately.
Ask for business cards from everyone you talk to. Then, follow up with a handwritten thank you note to those you really want to move forward with and an email or phone call to others. Let them know you're very interested in their company, apply online, and use them as a point of contact for your applications if there are jobs open.
I think the key to success at job fairs is being great on the day of, but also being incredibly professional with your follow up to reiterate your place with the company.
Good luck!
