AW: A few of the newborn photos I took

Here are a few of the newborn photos I took a few weeks ago.  This was my 2nd attempt at doing a newborn shoot and this was actually a 7 week old preemie, so I couldn't get a lot of the cutesy newborn snuggled up poses b/c he didn't want his legs close to his body and he refused to lie on his belly. :)  Alas, I think the mother is still pleased with my attempts.  I think you can click them for larger views??? I used Flickr and am not familiar with it yet.

  • Great job Heather!
  • What a cutie!  What lens did you use to shoot the first one with?  I love the strawberry blanket, too cute!

As a heads up, I would watermark these pictures with your nestie name because there are / have been a lot of images stolen off TN and TB.

Ya, I haven't made a watermark yet. I really need to do that ASAP or at least copyright them until I make a logo to use with a copyright logo.

I used my kit lens for all of them.  I really want another lens badly.  I am thinking of getting either a 35mm probably f/2.0 or a 50mm f/1.4, but can't decide.  I also think these were all shot in Aperture priority mode.  I did some fully manual, but most in Aperture priority.  It feels a little like cheating, but I'm learning!  I'm also brandy new to editing as in I just downloaded PSE9 last week and did some edits on the fly.

haha! So many things to do! I am pretty sure that I change my watermark ALL.THE.TIME! Just remember thst on TN and TB you can only use your nestie name, real name, or something like DO NOT COPY with the copyright symbol, anything resembling a business is against the TOS. :(

the 35 is great in a crop sensor for newborn shots. I have a 50 and it gets pretty tight but it's definitelty do-able! I'd like something around a 10-16 next but thats $$! Though my mom mentioned giving me her 105 macro ... DREAMY!!!

ap priority is just fine to be shooting in ESPECIALLY when you are just learning! Plus learning PSE9 at the same time! One great thing to go with PSE9 is callibration software because then you know your colors while editing will be spot on. It's crazy what differences I see in my pictures between my computer and my work computer!

welcome to the world if photography where you want everything there is :)

  • I was hoping you'd share these! Thanks. I really like the one with the rings on the feet.

I kind of have this inkling to ask a friend if I can take pictures of her kids this fall, just to practice. Not that I want to go into business or anything. Just for fun.

  • Heather those look great! Magda and I were talking about this earlier today.

Let me know if you want to take a trip up my way after our LO arrives to take some photos ;-)

LOL, I already have a huge wish list for Christmas, my birthday, and Mother's Day. I still need a tripod, remote, speed light, seamless, ahhhh and I could go on and on... :)  I think a better lens is my first need, though.  That would be so cool if your mom let you have her Macro lens!!

I've heard a lot about calibrating my computer monitor, but haven't looked it up. PSE9 has something in it I can do that with?  I have to buy the actual software still (Amazon has it on sale right now!) as I just did the 30 day trial to test it out.  It's a million times easier than GIMP, so that was a relief.

Would the 35 be ok for just everyday pictures at home with Mariela.  Space is not an issue in my house, nor is lighting.

Haha!!  Love the list!  Mine includes a Black Rapid strap, a battery grip, a JuJu Kelly Moore Bag and unrealistically: HDR software, 14mm - f/2.8, 105mm - f/2.8, and a 3rd body ... this time a full frame

Unfortunately calibrating is done with more software that is not part of the PSE9 package Sad  PSE9 is fantastic, I was so glad I upgraded from an earlier version ... once you really get into it and learn all of the tools, editing is great.  When you get it as close to correct as possible SOOC, PSE9 can really make the final edits a breeze to do.

If space and lighting aren't an issue in the house then it sounds like either lens would work for you.  What I would do is keep shooting with your kit and then go back and look at your exif data to see what you typically shoot at: closer to / around 35 or closer to / around 50 and then let that help you decide which lens to get next.

I say go for it!  At the very least you can chalk it up to more experience with your camera Wink  Keep in mind that you may decide to not do them in the end too.

Obviously I haven't been through L&D yet, so I don't know how I will be feeling after this little boy is here; however, I have done a few shoots while pregnant once being a newborn as well.  It's exhausting!

You should do them within the first 10 days after birth as that's when they are the most sleepy and the most bendy!

Plan for a 3-4 hour shoot and to be sweating a ton as you should have a space heater, warm blankets, and the temp in the room turned way up (all to keep LO sleeping).  I tend to find myself in crazy positions on the floor trying to get the right angle, so depending on how sore you are you may need alternate shots in the back of your mind too.
