formula to cow's milk

What is the best way to go about switching a 1 year old from formula to cow's milk?

Re: formula to cow's milk

  • We just switched cold turkey and C had no problem with that (served it in his morning bottle he hadn't gotten rid of yet and in sippy cups).  If he had refused it, we would have mixed the formula with 1/4 milk to 3/4 formula for a few days, then gone half and half, then 3/4 milk to 1/4 formula, then all milk.  I've heard that works well as a transition.

This is pretty much what I did. I wasn't terribly scientific about it and he did fine.

  • We started giving N cow's milk in a sippy with her dinner (not a full cup though) around 11 months. Then we quit formula cold turkey on her 1st birthday and went straight to sippies of milk with meals and snacks (if she hadn't gone over her limit of 20 oz per day - that was per our pedi's recommendation).

  • We switched cold turkey and didn't have any issues.  If we did have problems, the back up plan was to do half formula/half milk and slowly decrease formula until it was a non-issue.

  • We did sippys of milk at dinner then she was still getting a bed time bottle, and I wanted to use up my formula, so I did the 3/4,1/2, 1/4 thing for weeks at a time. :) I still miss giving El her bed time bottle.
  • We switched cold turkey.  She was taking pumped breastmilk, so I used it up and then switched her.  We kept the bottles for a few weeks after her first birthday.  After she got used to the milk, we took those away cold turkey, too.  The bottles weren't hard to get rid of because she had been using a sippy with water for a long time.  (i think we started soft spout sippies around 6 months)
