September 6th Randoms

Well School if officially back in session. Anybody have to send anyone off today or is it just me?

BTW: Holy Cold Snap Batman!

Re: September 6th Randoms

  • Hi.  Back to work.  Blerg.
  • I've apparently got Christmas on the brain.  Gasp!

My cube neighbor informed me that we have 8 paydays left until Christmas.  Oy.  So I emailed my mom asking her what she wants for Christmas.  I figure if I knock 1 person out with each paycheck, I won't be hurting so bad come December.  She responded by asking what we want for Christmas.  De ja vu, much?  I feel like I just gave her a list.

Also, I sent out a FB event invite to my family for our annual Christmas party.  It will be my 2nd time hosting.  I love hosting parties.  I don't want anyone to miss it.  Wink  (It was more of an STD than an actual invite, in my defense.)

    Only 110 days until Christmas!!

My birthday present from XN was Christmas-related, actually. He knows me.

  • Juli, welcome back from the west! How was your hiking trip?

Fun!  There are rumblings about us hosting Thanksgiving this year.  We have never hosted Thanksgiving (or Christmas) before.  We did host Easter and 4th of July this year though.  I don't know if Thanksgiving is going to happen.  It's more major than the other two, and I'm not sure if the logistics will work since none of our family actually lives anywhere near us.

We've been talking a little more about moving to TC at some point.  We like Grand Rapids and would be sad to move, but it would be really nice to live near enough to home where we could see our families on day trips.

  • I'm getting really frustrated with the board that I'm working on.  Like, I'm beginning to think about quitting.  I just spend so much time on it, and I feel like I accomplish very little due to the inner-workings of the organization, so it feels really stressful, frustrating, and often seems like a waste of time.  We went up north for the weekend, and we ended up leaving 90 minutes late because I was dealing with a bit of a crisis for that organization.  And then, within an hour of getting back last night, I was back to work, doing another project.

No purpose of this really.  Just venting.  I'm frustrated.

ETA: Oh, and on that note, now it's time for my lunch hour, which I will use to do work for them (as usual).  Whine whine whine whine.

  • I have mixed feelings about Christmas this year.  I'm excited that we'll have baby R to celebrate with, but not excited about who we're probably going to piss off becasue they didn't get enough time with baby R for the holidays.
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • Not to be a Debbie-Downer but did anyone else hear about the car fire in Wyoming on Friday?  The property is right next to my office.  I'm so glad that we got to leave early on Friday for the weekend, but the whole office is still a little on edge.
  • Or how about the Alger International Market (formerly Mediterranean Market) on Eastern having a fire this weekend? :(

I was *so* excited to buy jeans and sweaters for the fall (found some great ones last week), but was bummed about the heat wave when I bought them--but then failed to check the forecast for our visit to the east side...when it would've been a perfect time to bust out the new duds.  Brrr!

But I love it. This is hands down my favorite time of year.

  • Tuesdays are such bad days that even important birthdays can't redeem them.

I'm not having an especially bad day, just a long and tiring one.  It also sounds like everyone is experiencing a bit of weekend hangover.

The good news is "suffering" now means that by the time my next milestone birthday rolls around, I will have accomplished a huge life dream.

  • ughh!!! I accidently made two large payments on my CC this weekend. I forgot I had already set up a payment and made another one last night. I didn't notice until I logged in to my cc account and noticed I have a credit.

Good thing I have free line of credit with my checking that will cover that extra money coming out and that I get paid this Friday.  I also have a credit on my card which will cover my expenses for the next couple of weeks. Whoops. Embarrassed

Heeeeyyyy... I didn't know this is a milestone birthday for you.  Well, an extra happy birthday to you!

Oops, was I not supposed to say it?  :P

  • Awesome.  The first day under the new owners and our system just crashed.

Yay for double the work for me.

    Ugh.

Juli, welcome back from the west! How was your hiking trip?

Hi!  It was fabulous for 80% of the trip.  Then on my b-day Andy got the flu.  Then the next day, I got the flu.  Thus we spent more time in hotel bedrooms (well, and bathrooms) then we wanted to the last 3 days of our trip.  I was happy it didn't strike us in the backcountry though, and overall the trip was still amazing.

It was nice to be back in my own bed last night though.  And I don't just mean for the mattress, I also mean for the Jelly sleeping practically on my face, the Wrigley sleeping curled up next to my legs, the Gordie grunting in his sleep on his dog bed and the Toby in corner panting heavily because it takes him a long time to cool out after the excitement of seeing his owners again.

I can't even imagine having the flu while backcountry hiking. Ick! I'm sorry you got sick but very happy you were in an area with plumbing. And your furry friends are adoooooorrable.

  • Molly, sorry to hear about your tech problems.  That stinks.  Hope it's fixed soon and not too much extra work for you.

Juli, glad to hear that you mostly had a nice trip!  Sorry to hear that you guys were both sick though.  How rotten!  Also, I'm glad you weren't eaten by a bear.  Shortly after you left, there was a headline on Mlive about a Michigan resident who was killed by a bear at Yellowstone.  I was concerned until I saw it was a 60-year-old man from the UP.  I'm glad it wasn't you!

  • I was unpacking boxes of books this weekend and came across a book my uncle wrote about my grandpa's time as a POW in WWII. I  was wondering where it went in my 2 recent moves and was a little scared it had been lost. So glad to find it.

I opened it to flip through to some of my favorite parts and then saw an inscription to me written by my grandpa, who passed away about 3 years ago. I never noticed it before and neither had Mike.  I became super emotional and started to cry.  It was like a message from the beyond.

Oh my gosh, how special! I'm glad it wasn't lost and that you have these stories documented. So many people pass away without their stories ever being saved for the next generation.

Agreed.  Hoektastic, what a great keepsake!

I love the book and we are all so grateful to my uncle for putting it together.

And Chymes you are so right about lost stories. I wish I would have kept a journal while living in Milwaukee and Chicago.

My aunt's (Dad's brother's wife) mother passed away recently and I went to the visitation. They read from her journal that she kept the summer her family went to Italy to visit family. On the ship they took over, she met a young man. She talked about him being very nice and she hoped she would see him again while staying in Italy. He did indeed find her again that summer. They ended up married and had 11 children!

I could have listened to them read from her journal for hours. It was so well written and an amazing glimpse into life back then.

Haha, nbd.  I wasn't trying to keep it a secret.  It feels weird.  I almost feel like I've gotten younger this year instead of older with the whole "back to school" thing being around all of these 22 year olds :P

That sounds so interesting!  How neat that she journaled that experience.
