VA areas to move

Hi all, we're trying to figure out where to move ... hubby works in the arlington public school district and i'm currently unemployed until summer 2012.  i am a psychologist taking some time off and then i hope to be teaching or in private practice next year. we will have a 5y.o. and newborn twins.

we are hoping to rent at least a 3bdrm home that's under 2k/month. i cant predict my commute, but we'd like for his commute to be less than 15 miles. where would you suggest we move?

Re: VA areas to move

  • Under 2K within 15 miles of Arlington will be tough, I'm sorry.   To give you an idea rentals in my neighborhood a few miles from Arlington are $3000 to $4000 for a 3 bedroom. I would try looking in places like Springfield and Burke, and also possibly Falls Church.

Areas like Leesburg and Ashburn are quite nice and are places where you will get much more for your money but  they are more like 30 miles away.  I'd also be concerned about the commute because part of it would be on 66 which is HOV 2 during rush hour.

  • Thanks! I'm still trying to wrap my head around the cost of living expense out there! :( makes me really sad... I posted a similar question a while back but was hoping for some more specific info this time. Are there any secrets to finding rental properties? Websites??

  • I would check Craigslist daily. We used CL to find the house we rent in Arlington. However, we pay $2500 per month for a 3 bedroom, 3 bath house. The third bedroom can only be used as an office or a nursery for one crib and maybe a dresser...you'll find that quite a few places might say they have "three bedrooms" but in our experience one bedroom was only big enough for a small office. You might have luck if living near a Metro is not a factor - we were picky and wanted to be walking distance so everything we looked at was over $2K and that was for 2 bedrooms most of the time! But I still think 3 bedrooms at $2K or less is going to require patience on CL or realty websites.

  • ditto craigslist. when we were apartment hunting here, DH was scouring craigslist like it was his job. we love our apartment so it definitely paid off in the end.

    good luck!

  • I would definitely be checking Craigslist. Unfortunately, you are either going to have to live farther out (and have a longer commute) or have a smaller place for your budget. Housing prices are really high :-(

Neighborhoods around me that are family friendly and might be options include: Cameron Station, Kingstown, Hillwood, and Parkside of Alexandria.

  • As the pp have said, under $2k for a 3br in Arlington is a stretch. The cost of living is quite high. I third or fourth the recommendation for Craig's list. You can also try looking on homesdatabase.com and search for rentals. House rentals are very popular here due to the cost of living so it can be a decent hunt. Good luck! Oh and one more expense I never thought about before moving here is personal property tax for your vehicles. This is a yearly fee for several counties in NoVA separate from car registration. It is based on the value of your car. We have a 2010 Subaru and it cost us close to $500 this year. Just somehting else to add into your budget.
