Meeting with a potential pediatrician, what to ask?
Hey all,
DH, MIL, my mom (MIL and Mom are both helping watch Charli during the week) and I are all meeting with a local pediatrician tomorrow that came reccomended from some of my local bumpies. Can you all tell me what questions a mom & dad to be should be asking the pedi? Obviously I haven't done this before! TIA!
Re: Meeting with a potential pediatrician, what to ask?
We never actually interviewed our pedi, and then he moved after Nate's 4 month checkup, and we just got his replacement. We've had a good experience with both of them.
What I wanted to know from the start was the well baby checkup schedule and who to call for non-emergency questions and after hours.
If you are considering or have decided to follow an alternative vaccination schedule, you should talk about that.
This is so important!
Also, just to get the vibe of the Dr. I wanted someone who was slightly laid back and not over crazy about things.
I really love my Dr. I didn't know after my first visit if I would (honestly, I came home crying), but now I couldn't imagine not having her in our lives. (That sounds cheesy). She is super down to earth and laid back and believes that every baby is different so she isn't on a strict anything. For example, some Dr's say no foods before 6 months-her theory is some need before and some shouldn't start til after.
The only specific question I had was hours and days. I wanted a practice that was open 7 days a week so I didn't have to run to an emergency room if I didn't have to (though weekends our office only has mornings visits).
OH and our Dr will do after hour home visits too! Something you may want to inquire about?
Defiitely ask about a after-hours line or emergency line. So far that's the only time I've needed to call in, on the weekend and at night.
Are your moms going to go in with you? That might be a little overwhelming for the doctor. I'd think just you and DH could meet him, and maybe have a list of questions they want to ask going in. They can always come for follow-up visits. Just my opinion though.
