We have a long (150 ft) driveway in a neighborhood of houses that are close together and close to the street. For this reason, we have a mailbox at the end of the driveway. The side of the house faces the street, but you can see that we have a covered front porch on the front of the house. The driveway goes to the back of the house, where there is a mudroom but no covered area outside the house.
I order a lot of stuff online, but generally ship with UPS. This time, Amazon shipped with USPS. Normally, the mailman crushes any box or folds any envelope or bag to jam it into our mailbox so he doesn't have to walk up the driveway. Annoying, but fine - if it rains, at least the package is protected. The diploma from my Master's degree has a fold in it, but I let it go. If it's raining and the box can't fit in the mailbox, he usually leaves it on the front porch.
Well, yesterday we got a box that was too big for the mailbox. As you know, it was pouring all day. Our driveway is a mud pit. The forecast, which I would assume mail carriers pay attention to since their job is outside, is to rain for the next 2 days. Well, he chose to put the box by the door at the driveway. In the rain. Without a plastic bag over it.
In the past, he's either put boxes in a plastic bag or left them on the covered front porch so they don't get soaked. I don't know what was different about yesterday, but the box had 2 cups (no I'm not exaggerating) of water in it. I had to stand outside in the rain and open the box and pour the water out of it. Thankfully Amazon had put the contents in plastic, so the item wasn't so soggy that I have to return it.
I'm thinking of calling the local post office branch and asking if we had a different carrier yesterday to find out if it was our regular guy or a temp. I think it's worth complaining about, because what if it was something that shouldn't have gotten wet? And, seriously, it was pouring. A little common sense, please.
Would you say something, or just let it go because the item was ok?
Re: WWYD Re: Mail carrier
I'd definitely complain, while not necessarily expecting anything to happen because of it. We've consistently had problems with our mail carrier ever since we've lived here (5+ years), and even though we and several others in our complex have complained, nothing has been done.
I'd definitely speak up, if only for my piece of mind. That's pretty ridiculous that he chose not to put the package on your front porch, especially since it was raining!
yeah, I would complain.
