I hate the customer service at Verizon, and I hate the people who send me my bill (because it's wrong EVERY month) but I do like the actual Verizon service - we have Verizon FiOS for cable, land line, and internet, and we have Verizon Wireless for our Mobile phones.
I just feel like we pay a LOT of this stuff, so I wanted to compare with anyone willing to share their expenses, Verizon or otherwise.
We have the FiOS "triple play"package for $140/mo., which includes:
- TV: HD channels on one TV (we don't pay for cable channels, though for some reason we've been getting Showtime for free). We pay for one regular set top box ($5/mo.) for our non-HD TV, and one HD DVR rental ($16/mo.). Then there are all the other fees, totalling about $13.50
- INTERNET: 35/35 up/down (plenty fast obviously)
- LAND LINE: all sorts of fun voice mail features, including an email sent to our Verizon accounts any time someone leaves a voice mail - I like that feature - plus unlimited long distance.
Total = $174 for TV, internet, land line
Note: We do need a land line, for ADT and for peace of mind when babysitters are at our house - I don't ever want to gamble on a teenager's cell phone dying while they're trying to call 911 because my kid is in danger.
We just upgraded our wireless plan to include 1400 minutes shared between DH (android) and me (a prehistoric flip phone no data for me) for $90/mo. We just added the cheapest data plan for DH's Android (which he uses for work), for $30/mo. and I think that total with fees will be about $130 or $140 maybe. He gets reimbursed $75 a month from work since he uses his for work. So if I'm doing all the math right with our new plan -
Best guess on Wireless total: $140 ($65 out of pocket for us).
So - all together, total of about $240 for us (if we didn't get the $75, it would be over $300!)
Does this sound really expensive?
Re: How much do you pay for phone/mobile/internet/cable?
I don't know what the breakdown on ours is, as it is all through Verizon, but we have FIOS with 1 DVR and a couple of HD boxes, land line with unlimited domestic long distance, FIOS internet, and two Droid phones with 700 shared minutes and unlimited texting on my phone only and we pay $345/month - your deal doesn't sound too bad to me - though I do think it is outrageous that we pay basically a car payment every month for this stuff.
i don't do the bills but we just discussed this the other day
we just switched to comcast for phone/internet. and i LOATHE comcast but its saving us a TON of money. both phone and internet are 65. when we used to be paying 65 for our landline alone. and 65 for our internet by itself. but fios isn't even an o ption for us yet
our verizon wireless for 2 smart phones with a discount of 20% is about 115. we have 400 minutes each and for now unlimited data
tv we have direct tv and we will NEVER EVER EVER switch from that as i love it. i have no idea how much we pay. i'd have to guess we are paying at least 75 but thats with 2 tivos and 2 hd recievers and no pay channels
How'd you get a 20% discount if you don't mind me asking?
I think we have the same FiOS package, but I pay less through a discount from my employer. I get a crazy discount on wireless service right now (again - through my employer), so I won't bother sharing how much we pay.
I'm pretty sure we pay less with the FiOS package than we did when we had Comcast for tv/internet and Verizon for phone. All the tech. is expensive. (It regularly irks me to think that we pay $16/month to rent our DVR. I hate knowing that I"ll be renting a box forever.)
RIGHT?! My thought exactly.
We have comcast and don't have a landline and we pay $120. I'm not sure of the breakdown, but every 6 months I call and they give me a discount on one of our services (discounted cable or discounted internet, on the rare occassion they'll throw in premium channels like HBO, but it's very very rare.)
I think it's incredible how much you have to pay for this crap. We've been debating "quitting" cable for 2 years and we can't seem to pull the trigger for some reason.
Do you own your router? Comcast charges a rental fee each month with theirs, and we bought a router for like $60 and it's saving us money now.
ETA: Forgot about mobile. We are with Verizon and i'm really happy with them, i've been with them for 10 years. We have 2 smartphones (droid) with unlimited minutes/text and international calling capability and we pay $179. DH gets a discount through work, it's either 15% or 20%.
We make the rockin' world go 'round.
Wh have tv/internet/phone through Comcast. It includes the 1 HD DVR and modem rental at a rate of $140/month. Our mobile phone plan is through Verizon as a family plan with two smart phone data plans and an add on of my parents. That comes to about $170/month if my mom doesn't go over her minutes.
I too can't believe we pay so much for a few wires. It's not like the cable company does anything special for me, like clean my house, so why so much?
We pay:
-around 50 a month for our Dish Network (DH recently just downgraded our package to save)
-$12/mth for home phone (VOIP with Phone Power - it averaged out to that when we paid 200 upfront a year ago, that was for 2 years)
-we were paying up to $150/mth for our cell phone bill. But my tiny AW squeezed in here is that DH's new employer is so small that one of the few benefits he offers is including employees and spouses on his plan. So we now pay $0 a month for cell phones! SCORE!
-(eta forgot internet) $60/mth for Comcast high speed
Cutting out the landline for us really saved. I wasn't too thrilled about it, but we had been shelling out 75 for it and that just seemed ridiculous to me. With our new cell phones, we get much better service at our house now too.
We don't do cable, we have an antennae and pay $7 a month for netflix streaming.
Internet is about $65 for the fastest Comcast supplies. We have our own router.
No house line, although we've investigating putting in an emergency only one and I think it is about $15 a month from Verizon. For this line I do not want VOIP, so bundling it does not make sense.
For Verizon cell service we pay $110 a month for 2 phones, no data. I think it's time we renegotiated this. It's completely ridiculous.
We also have FIOS.
I'm not sure the breakdown in our package but we pay $164/month for the landline, cable and internet. We have 1 HD DVR box, and one additional tier which DH wanted.
Our cell service - also with Verizon is $160/month and that's for 2 smartphone with data plans, unlimited texting and 700 shared minutes a month. We also don't get any reimbursement for either of our employers (I have a seperate work cell phone which is through AT&T but I don't see that bill).
FYI: Showtime is free for us right now also, I think it was some promo that they were offering so I'm watching my bill each month to see if it's limited and will eventually get charged for it.
Our cable/internet is about $110/month- that includes DVR/HBO/several optional channels.
Our cell service runs about $120/month with unlimited data and 700 minutes. We don't have a landline.
The amount we spend on cable/internet makes me sick, but it's still cheaper than not having it. There was a period of 2 weeks where we didn't have cable b/c of some line issues, and DH spent almost $75 at the sports bar around the corner. That was not cool at all.
I don't know how the pp gets hers, but I get mine through work. Actually, through my last job (NYS teachers union) but they never stopped giving it to me when I moved and I never told them. We get 19% off. Just mobile though.
So, for 2 iPhones, unlimited text, unlimited data, we pay 150ish per month. At home for the FiOS internet and digital cable (one DVR, one other box) it's a bit less, about 110 I believe. No landline.
My Food Blog
Cable/Internet (Verizon FIOS): $163 per month
This includes HDTV cable with the sports tier package, HBO, Showtime, 1 DVR, 2 additional boxes (can access DVRed stuff from them, but cannot add or delete from the DVR via them), and 1 regular cable box for the girl downstairs (at the house we rent all utilities are shared between us and the girl who rents the basement apartment). I have no clue what tier internet we have.
My cell phone (Verizon): $81 per month. I have a Droid with 450 minutes per month, unlimited nights and weekends, the $10/month text message plan, and the data package. The $81 is after my federal government employee discount.
I don't know much about DH's cell phone plan other than it's through AT&T and is roughly the same amount as my bill per month I think.
I have some vague memory of asking Verizon if they did any discounts for Feds (me) but I think they do not. DH gets that $75/mo. reimbursement, so that is nice.
Are other peoples' discounts through work? Anyone a Fed?
Check out this link to see if you qualify for a discount through your work.
We get a discount through DH being a federal employee on Verizon. I think it is 15% or 20%.
We spend entirely too much on both cable and mobile. We have HD/DVR/Internet and spend about $140 per month with Comcast. We have no regular phone.
Two iphones with data plans and shared minutes about $160 per month.
We also have Verizon for everything.
FIOS TV/phone/internet - $99 per month plus some fees. I can't remember what the total is.
Cell phones - We pay a ridiculous amount, like $170/mo. Totally ridiculous, I know. But we both have smartphones with unlimited data and 1400 min/month.
We also pay $13/mo for Tivo service (we own the box). I can't believe Tivo is cheaper than a DVR through Verizon.
