Poll: Tipping on Vacation

On recent trips, I started thinking about this and wondering what other people do.  So, if you don't mind sharing:

Do you tip housekeeping at hotels?

Do you tip waiters at all-inclusive resorts (if you've been to one)?

Do you tip complimentary shuttle drivers (i.e. hotel to airport)?

Any other random thoughts?

Re: Poll: Tipping on Vacation

  • Do you tip housekeeping at hotels?  On long vacations, yes, but not for one or two nights.  And on our trip to Cozumel I didn't tip because it was the worst service I've ever gotten.

Do you tip waiters at all-inclusive resorts (if you've been to one)? We have only been to two.  The first had a policy where tips were included, but you were welcome to give extra for extraordinary service.  We didn't tip daily, but gave tips at the end for some of our favorite servers/bartenders; we didn't see many people tipping.  At our second, there was no policy stated.  At first we didn't tip because we didn't have cash on us, but we got awful service and started tipping.  Even then, it was less than I would normally tip - just a few dollars.  We were running out of cash, plus we were still getting pretty awful service.

Do you tip complimentary shuttle drivers (i.e. hotel to airport)?  I usually don't, only because I don't have cash on me, but if I do I give them a few dollars.

Any other random thoughts?  I'm usually a generous tipper, but I feel like maybe I'm being stingy on vacation.  I especially don't know what to do at an AI - policies vary, and I'm not paying for the meal, so don't have a total to calculate gratuity from, plus I can't put it on a credit card.  I am just not a cash person.  And I am curious to see if most people tip housekeeping for a couple of nights, maybe I'm being horrible!

  • Do you tip housekeeping at hotels?  Only if we're staying longer than a weekend.  I figure if we're there for several days (especially during the week) we probably have the same housekeeper.  I don't know if they pool their tips, but since I only leave a tip at the end of the vacay I'd hate for the person who did the bulk of the work to miss out.

Do you tip waiters at all-inclusive resorts (if you've been to one)? No.  I thought the all-inclusives specifically say "no tipping" since it's assumed to be included in the cost.  I could be wrong, in which case major fail on our honeymoon.

Do you tip complimentary shuttle drivers (i.e. hotel to airport)?  If they help with our bags, about a buck a bag.  Other wise a buck or two, but nothing significant.

Any other random thoughts?   I'm lousy about having cash on hand, even when we travel, so I sometimes fail in this department.  I'm trying to do better but I suspect hospitality workers have a 10 most hated list and I'm close to the top...

  • Greg will tip everyone! On our HM tips were included whenever you bought drinks he still tipped.

  • Some AI's actually have a no-tipping policy.  We weren't really planning to tip on our HM, but we really loved three of the servers.  Even then, it was like $10 for the week, so it definitely wasn't a good tip.

  • And one other random thought...I despise when baggage handlers (or other staff) literally stand there with their hand out or 'advise' you on the 'recommended' tip.  The people who move the baggage for cruise ships will actually hold your luggage hostage if you don't tip them...dude, I didn't ask for your help in the first place!  I've noticed this at airports with the guys who 'help' with curbside check-on too.  They literally lift your bag onto the conveyor belt and then look at you waiting for their 'tip' and get NASTY if you don't fork over cash.

  • Do you tip housekeeping at hotels?  Yes

Do you tip waiters at all-inclusive resorts (if you've been to one)? No since we usually only eat at a sit down one night, the rest of the time we usually do the buffet. Bartenders yes, at the end of the week and discreetly since they can get in trouble for that.

Do you tip complimentary shuttle drivers (i.e. hotel to airport)? If they touch my bag, yes.

Any other random thoughts? Not at this time. Thanks for asking.

No.Any other random thoughts? H does not believe in tipping, except for waiters/waitresses at restaurants. When we went on our HM in St Lucia, there were guys at the airport that took the bags out of the shuttle from the resort and wheeled them all of 20 feet and expected a tip. When they said something to H, he was like "I didn't ask you to move my bags. I was going to do it myself."If we were to take a cruise, however, I would automatically have gratuity added beforehand for the housekeeping and servers.

  • When we were in Cozumel, we didn't have many bags so we were going to carry them ourselves (and did, on the ferry and shuttle) but the concierge at the hotel wouldn't let us.  We didn't want to make too much of a fuss, and he insisted it was policy.  So I didn't tip him because it annoyed me.  I do tip $1-$2 per bag generally, though.  I would on airport shuttles, but I don't think they ever touch my bags - there's always someone else the driver helps first.
