Zumba ladies

I know we have a few girls here that participate regularly. I tried 2 classes so far at my gym and didn't care for either one. I was wondering if it's the instructor or maybe it's just not my thing.

How is the class structured where you take it? I am used to any type of dance class having an instruction portion to learn the moves and then you do them. This lady just jumped right in with no instruction or anything, half of the people in the class didn't know what was going on at all and others seemed to be familiar with each dance. Is this normal?

Re: Zumba ladies

  • I'm interested to read the reaponses. My work gym is offering Zumba starting this Friday and I'm really nervous to try it. I am very uncoordinated.

  • I don't know what "normal." I've been to other gyms where the classes have been exactly like that - just go go go with no explanation and the workout sucks because you're just trying to figure out what you're doing the whole time. There's also not a lot of instructor/student interaction at the other gyms I've been to which I'm not a fan of. It's like the instructor is in her own world up front.

I think that's part of the reason I like my zumba so much. They very much want everyone to feel confident and comfortable and take the time to explain new things always or things that we've all been having trouble with.

So yeah, I think it really does just depend on the instructor.

    Also YGM.

  • Hugely enormously ridiculously dependant on the instructor. The first Zumba I took was at Baileys in Baymeadows with Lilly, and I think she was probably the most instructional I've ever had. At the beginning of each song she would demonstrate the basic steps we would see, and then jump in. It might take a few times of seeing the song to "get it" in terms of flowing from move to move, but you would at least recognize what was going on. This was what got me hooked. I'd say it was a 7.5 on a 1-10 scale of intensity (1 being "I'm not sweating," 10 being "I need a stretcher")

The next couple of instructors I used were at the Y, and I liked them both "eh". Their routines were kind of boring, and they didn't do much instructions. They'd call out a move or two as they went, but having no clue what a "swichback-changeup" is, I wasn't exactly helped by that. lol. These were probably a 7 intensity-wise.

Then I had the best, which is the same one LB is talking about. They don't instruct before a song unless it is something new or it's obvious from previous classes that no one is getting it. But they do a really good job of calling out and using hand signals. I have found that I like this the best. While the first couple of classes were maybe a 6.5 intensity-wise, once you learn the moves and spend less time going "wait, what?" and looking to that girl who you realized knows what's going on, it is probably a 9. Less time talking = more working out.

Then I tried one at the Baileys at Atlantic and Penman and juuust about died from the incredible amout of SUCK. It was these 2 women who pretty much just wanted to watch themselves shake their butts in the mirror. There were only like 10 ppl in the class -- 5 in their 20s, and 5 grandmas. At one point they split us up and had a west-side-story-esque dance off, with the young girls on one side and the gmas on the other. Our side was supposed to run up to the grannies, turn around, and Beyonce our butts in their faces. How about no? I would never go back to this one. Intensity was probably a 4 or 5 because i spent most of the class going "WTF??"

I have a Baileys membership now and am kind of scared to try any more instructors. I'm content with spinning for now (I say that like I go to the gym lately. HAH!), but I know I'll eventually need to get back to it..

That was a ridiculously long way of saying "yes, the instructor drastically impacts the zumba experience."

  • I guess Zumba will be something I may try again in the future but for now there is only the one instructor at my gym and it sounds like she sucks. All she does is sing to herself the whole time and give no instruction whatsoever. I was just trying to keep up with her as she was going and getting no clues as to what was coming next.

It was weird because it seemed like a popular class, but it definitely did not work for me. How am I supposed to get a workout when I don't know what's going on? Thanks for the feedback!

  • I guess Lilly is gone, huh? Sad. I had actually thought about going back to that side of town just to see her, to see if I liked it as much now that I have something to compare it to.

I'm not even sure of the instructors name because her accent is so thick I can't understand. She's a tiny little Latino lady on crack is the only way I can describe her.

    Kate, YGM!

  • hahaha no, definitely not her. Lilly was a light-skinned black girl, no accent of any kind, probably a bit younger than me or my age at the time (...not that she would have "caught up" by now.. lol).

  • GHFC had a "learn the moves" class before the actual class but the instructor also talks through everything as it's being done.
