Loestrin 1/20 (Or Lo Loestrin 24)

Anyone have any experiences to share?  Side effects...love it/hate it?  I just got two months worth of Lo Loestrin 24 as a sample from my gyno yesterday.  She also gave me a prescription for Loestrin 1/20 (The generic version) for once those run out.  I'll probably be due to start taking them in a couple weeks, but I was just curious if anyone on here has any advice for me as to what I should expect.

   Thanks everyone.  :)

Re: Loestrin 1/20 (Or Lo Loestrin 24)

  • I've been on 24 for years and never had any problems. My period is super light and short just about every month. There have been a few times when I haven't even had any bleeding, but I didn't like that (scary!)

The only downside in my opinion is I feel like the hormones have affected my sex drive. I know that this is one of the lowest hormone pills, so take that with a grain of salt.

  • I was on Loestrin 24 when I was on the pill. It worked really well for me; I can't report any side effects. I do have a friend who's still on it, though, who no longer gets her period. She's been on it much longer than I was (I was on 9 months; she's been on since sometime in 2008 or 2009).

You're supposed to get your period (it's shorter, lighter, and generally more enjoyable) while on Loestrin 24, so I strongly suggest talking to your obgyn if it stops. God knows why my friend won't pick up a phone and make sure the pill is working correctly with her body...

  •    Thanks ladies.  :)

Is it expensive?  My doctor wrote me a prescription for Loestrin 1/20 because, she told me, it was a lot cheaper.  I'm waiting to get the prescription filled until I get a chance to try the sample pack she gave me and make sure I want to pay for it, but from what I've seen online the Loestrin 1/20 doesn't seem to be significantly lower in price at all... Huh?  I'm wondering if she possibly wanted me to get the generic version of it and forgot to specify that.

My mom gives me samples of Loestrin 24 all the time, BUT a few months ago she forgot to send them and I ran out of pills. She called me in an Rx of the 24 and I went to pick it up and it was 60$ (I have crappy insurance so I doubt the cost would be much, if any higher w/o insurance). I called her and was like WTF-why so expensive? So she called the pharmacy back and had them fill me the generic Loestrin 24 (I can't remember the name of it). I think I remember it being about $20.

Loestrin 24 offers a rewards card that makes the price $24 for the first year. My obgyn said I could get another one when the first year was up, no problem. But regularly, yes, the price is around $60. Waaaay too steep for b/c.

I'd ask your obgyn about the card, or do a little research online. I think the company will send you one.

But if the generic costs virtually the same, there's probably no reason to pursue it.

  • I have been on Loestrin 24 for 8 months now and have two periods a month. I have the birth control induced one and then one where my regular period normally would be. I haven't been able to switch due to moving out of the country and not having insurance yet but I will once I can. I've had no other problems on it besides that but it's annoying.

  • I was on Loestrin 24 for a year...it was my first birth control and my current insurance doesn't cover it, but I would recommend it to anyone and everyone! I noticed no side effects and since you're only taking the placebo pill for 4 days I didn't have my period at all which was really nice! It's awesome!
  • I've been on two generic forms of LoEstrin 1/20 (Microgestin and Junel) for several years.  I've never had any problems or side effects while on either of these.  I've also taken the LoEstrin before I got on the generic, and that was fine as well.  For a while, I did skip periods, but the doctor said to enjoy because sometimes it does stop.  Otherwise, I have very light periods, so I guess I don't view that as a side effect, but a nice perk.  Good luck!

Once upon a time, there was a boy who loved a girl, and her laughter was a question he wanted to spend his whole life answering.
  • I've been on it now for 4 years and I truly love it, it was given to me bc I had heavy long periods, we are talking 8 days of heavy flow. The reason I love it: 4 days of light period. Now there are a few things that make me also not like it....I get really bad lower back aches and cramps which I never had before. I lost my insurance coverage 2 yrs ago and the insurance I got after didn't cover it, my doctor put me thru 4 other pills and after trying each for 3 months, Loestrin 24 just seemed to be the right one for me. I suggest you try it and see how your body feels and then go from there!

Ask your doctor about that card, some ppl pay $24 for it and some ppl get $24 off. My insurance now covers it and I would be paying $35 w/o the card, but with the card I pay $24.

  • I was on Loestrin 24 for 3 years and didn't have much of a problem with it until the past few months.  I have been having an absent period for the last 3 months and pretty extreme mood swings.  My ob/gyn says it isn't anything to be alarmed about, but I am in the process of changing pills.  It's too stressful for me...
  • I used to be on OTC High. I was on it and ran out. The doctor I used to go to is in another state. My SIL used to work for an OBGYN and gave me some Loestrin 24 Sample. All I can say is I have been taking them for a week now.

I feel it has increased my Sex Drive!! My Husbad says where is my wife and what have you done to her. I will have to wait and see how my periods are!

  •    Thank you everyone for all of your advice!  I was getting ready to start my sample pack of Loestrin 24 either this Sunday or next, but I just got a call from my doctor's office a couple days ago telling me that I am not to start it before getting blood work done.  Props to my doctor for remembering that my mother got diagnosed with a blood disorder when she was pregnant with me, and wanting to make sure I'm not at any risk of blood clotting if I go on the pill.  So for now, I guess I'm just waiting to see what happens...I really appreciate the info from everyone, though.  :)
  • I started it back in August and i must say my fave yet!! i read the posts on other sites that your flow is lighter and for some its almost non existent, i am one of the lucky ones its almost nothing but spotting...

The first month thought, the adjustment period was different, cramps, back aches, and headaches, but it was totally worth it..And when you have to double up because you missed one there is no naseau

I did the patch before, ended up pregnant,so 7 months and we are still going strong i highly recommend it..

  • Have none of you experienced depression/lack of interest/fatigue since you started taking it? Honestly...
  • I experienced some initial nausea (a couple of days) and some minor weight gain (may have been for other reasons, hehe).

Anyway, I found this page when I started taking Loestrin 24: loestrin 24 side effects

I haven't experienced depression, but I suppose that it's a possible side effect. I think you should contact your doctor.

  • I was on Loestrine for 3 months before I switched. The first month was horrible but I stuck it out because everyone told me it would get better. I was nauseous all the time, started getting migraines and my hormones were going crazy. I was emotional and irritable and I constantly felt on edge. It got a little better after awhile but I still didn't feel like myself. I was tired, weak, easily upset and often sick to my stomach. I called my doctor and asked for a new birth control. Now I am on Cryselle and I feel wonderful. It was a night and day difference within the first week. My advice is to stick it out for a few weeks because the beginning will always be rough but don't be afraid to switch if you're not satisfied.
  • I was on Loestrin 24 for the first 6 months of marriage and was nauseous constantly and gained 30 pounds. Tried another kind-orthocyclin and same thing happened. I'm now off the pill and doing natural family planning and condoms and losing weight.
  • birth control, was a progressive weight gain, and eventually it was putting me into a depression every time i took it out, and for a few days after i put it back in (Nuva ring) but that was after two years of continuous use. I have since gone off the pill and back in proper spirits after the first month of being off it, the weight has yet to come off, but I'm working on that!
