TSP question

Who can my H go chat with about TSP contributions?  I know we can put how much we want taken out online, but I don't want to take too much out of his takehome.  He said he asked MilPers but no one seemed to know.  I thought that would be who he would talk to, but I guess not.

Re: TSP question

  • He should talk to a financial advisor about how much to take out and how to build a savings plan.   They will also advise him on which funds to choose.

USAA has free financial advising for military, and so does FirstCommand.  A lot of people have issues with FirstCommand -- I've been a customer for 8 years and have had absolutely no problem at all with them, but it does depend on your specific advisor, and you do have to do your homework.  Any of these companies will also try to push their own product (they make commission on mutual funds and IRAs that you get from them, so of course that's what they'll want you to do).

I'm not sure if MilitaryOnesource does financial advising, but they might.  Anyone know?

  • Thanks!  We both have Roth IRAs through USAA, but I didn't think to give them a call.
