Anyone have any good garage sale tips?
I am downsizing to a smaller house and need to get rid of a lot of accumulated junk, if you ladies have any yard sale tips to share I would love to hear them.
Thanks.
Re: Anyone have any good garage sale tips?
Talk to your neighbors, if you can get a community garage sale going it will help bring in a lot more traffic. Even if they're not interested in participating hand them a flyer (doesn't have to be anything elaborate) of what you'll be selling, neighbors can be some of your best buyers.
Advertise it on craigslist and list some of your best or specialty items, even items like books, baby clothes, etc. will appeal to a lot of people. List the brands you have. People are more interested in "Calvin Klein Jeans" than just "jeans". You can also take out an ad in your local newspaper but you will have to pay for that.
Put up signs early in the week "Garage Sale Sunday 7-12!" with your address so people get excited about it. Post on busy streets. Day of you can get little balloons or something to attach to signs, helps visibility and hopefully more traffic.
Start your sale early and prep everything the night before so you have to do very little the day of. Garage sale's can be a lot of work.
Good luck!
As an avid garage sale-seeker, definitely advertise. Use your local paper and put up signs around your neighborhood. Search your local grocer for their public board and post signs there too. I agree w/PP's in gathering your neighbors together for a block-party garage sale - power in numbers! If you're doing a solo sale, put an optional "post pone rain date" also.
As for sorting - first, get together everything that you're going to sell and compile it in one space. Next, sort things by category for easy displaying later and easier navigating for your buyer's - i.e. kitchen stuff, clothing, baby supplies, bath goods, etc.
Finally, price everything a dollar higher than you expect to get. You can always negotiate down, but never ask up. Price things with bright, orange stickers and go to the bank for small bills and change to have on hand. Place your cash table in the center of your driveway/lawn so that you're easily accessible for people to ask questions/bargain and also can keep an eye on the entire space.
A few things I've learned from doing two major city wide garage sales a year:
