Anyone have any good garage sale tips?

I am downsizing to a smaller house and need to get rid of a lot of accumulated junk, if you ladies have any yard sale tips to share I would love to hear them.

 Thanks.

Re: Anyone have any good garage sale tips?

  • Talk to your neighbors, if you can get a community garage sale going it will help bring in a lot more traffic. Even if they're not interested in participating hand them a flyer (doesn't have to be anything elaborate) of what you'll be selling, neighbors can be some of your best buyers.

Advertise it on craigslist and list some of your best or specialty items, even items like books, baby clothes, etc. will appeal to a lot of people. List the brands you have. People are more interested in "Calvin Klein Jeans" than just "jeans". You can also take out an ad in your local newspaper but you will have to pay for that.

Put up signs early in the week "Garage Sale Sunday 7-12!" with your address so people get excited about it. Post on busy streets. Day of you can get little balloons or something to attach to signs, helps visibility and hopefully more traffic.

Start your sale early and prep everything the night before so you have to do very little the day of. Garage sale's can be a lot of work.

    Good luck!

  • I always look for baby items at yard sales and flea markets so I would elaborate on that if you have that to sell and also men always look for tools. Whenever my family has a yard sale all the men stop and ask for tools. I try to make my pricing easy like .50 cents, $1, $5, $10. It's my goal to get rid of EVERYTHING so I never turn down an offer. I've seen people ask my mom for a better price on something and she gets stuck on how much she paid for it a few years ago and it doesn't get sold. Who wants crap sitting in their basement/attics collecting dust?! Make money and get it out! Good Luck
  • Definitely advertise on craigslist, facebook, online local newspaper (this option may be free). Make sure your sale sign is on a busy street with big, easy to read address and times. Price things evenly .25, .50. $1. That way giving back change is not an issue. Make sure you have plenty of quarters too. Put some bigger items in front where they're visible to people driving by. If your object is to get rid of stuff, price to sell and don't refuse an offer!
  • As an avid garage sale-seeker, definitely advertise.  Use your local paper and put up signs around your neighborhood.  Search your local grocer for their public board and post signs there too.  I agree w/PP's in gathering your neighbors together for a block-party garage sale - power in numbers!  If you're doing a solo sale, put an optional "post pone rain date" also.

As for sorting - first, get together everything that you're going to sell and compile it in one space.  Next, sort things by category for easy displaying later and easier navigating for your buyer's - i.e. kitchen stuff, clothing, baby supplies, bath goods, etc.

Finally, price everything a dollar higher than you expect to get.  You can always negotiate down, but never ask up.  Price things with bright, orange stickers and go to the bank for small bills and change to have on hand.  Place your cash table in the center of your driveway/lawn so that you're easily accessible for people to ask questions/bargain and also can keep an eye on the entire space.

  • A few things I've learned from doing two major city wide garage sales a year:

    • People steal - keep an eye on all of your stuff
    • People don't bring their own bags - collect some shopping/garbage/grocery/whatever you can find bags
    • People are sometimes too afraid to ask you for a price and then they will just leave. Put prices on as much as you possibly can before the sale. If you have a bunch of small or similar items (mcdonalds toys, dvds and books, random junk) , put them in a box or bin and label them 1.00 each, BOGO, etc...
    • Do not leave your money on a table or anywhere else unattended. If it gets really busy I have actually found that wearing a fanny pack and unloading it once in awhile is most effective and convenient. Then you can walk around without people having to find you at a table or having to drag them back to your desk
    • At the end, put everything in your car and drive it to the good will. You can write off donations, much better than dragging your stuff you didn't want at the beginning of the day back into the house!
    • HAPPY SELLING!
