New military wife

Hi, everyone

As you can tell from the subject I am newly married to a military man. Although we have been together for five years he has only recently joined. Anyways, I was hoping to connect with some military wives on here because I am currently away from the base at college so I feel kinda isolated from the other women in my situation. Plus, I only have a couple of married friends. Any advice is appreciated, especially on how to save money! lol.

Re: New military wife

  • Hi and welcome.  My first bit of advice would be to click on the button in my siggy.  It will lead you to the MN FAQ page.  There is a ton of information there that you may find useful.  Lurk on this page for a bit. You will get a good feel for how this life goes.

There are all sorts of ways to save money. Many cell phone providers will give you a discount.  We get a 10% discount from AT&T.  Ask for a military discount any where you go. The worst they can say is no.  We save a ton of money by cooking the majority of our meals at home.  Also, make up a budget.  Look at where your money is going and see where you can cut things out.

  • Welcome!

TX has some great suggestions.  The best piece of advice I can give is to ask questions if you don't understand something.  You can ask your husband, the FRG leader, your local sponsor (if you have one), or just the person you're dealing with at the time.  It's definitely overwhelming at first but asking questions will definitely help you understand how things work and why they're happening a certain way.

  • Is your DH in the Army? If so, there is a training program for family members called Army Family Team Building (AFTB). The training is offered in person or online. It is a good introduction to Army life and there is information on budgeting and how to save money. Google AFTB and you'll easily find it. Army Community Services is also a good place to get support.

BTW, I'm Marni and my DH is in the Army. We've been married for five years. We have a little boy and a dog. Welcome to MN!

  • Hi and welcome.  My H is AD Army.  No kiddos for us yet but we do have two fur-babies that keep us very busy.

I would suggest the FRG leaders and such.  My H is really great at answering questions for me however, it is in "Army Talk" and I sometimes find it hard to follow.  HAA.  I can't tell you how many times I look at him with my head cocked and saying yeah I understand and then google it.  Big Smile.  I think Smudges*Mom is right, trying finding a class for new spouses.  Don't worry, I think somethings you just learn going through the process.

  • Thanks so much for the advice! I plan on checking out all the things you ladies mentioned. ;)
  • Yes, he is! He told me something about a class but I was away at school so it's kinda hard. I will def. look into the online one though. Thanks a lot Marni. My name is Libby.
  • Yeah it seems like I have new questions everyday and the bad thing is different people tell you different things so it gets confusing. Even his sergeants tell him different thing. lol. The Army is such a mess! Thanks so much!
  • Hi Libby!

Welcome to one of the coolest boards around & congrats on your new marriage!

Most people around here are more than willing to answer questions & give you "the real deal."  Since you're in college, you may not be interested in reading anymore than you have to, but I'd recommend 2 books if you're so inclined:

"A Civilian's guide to the U.S. Military" Barbara Schading (Not Military wife specific, but has some really good general info.  I didn't know some of this stuff & I grew up in a Military family!)

"After the War Zone" Laurie Slone (I truely credit this book not only with helping me understand what I was going through when I got back from Iraq, but it also helps me prepare for the emotional detachment H goes through when he deploys. It has a permanent spot on my bookcase.)

Anyway, hope you get to spend as much time with your H as possible!

  • Thank you I will definitely look up those books for my summer collection of reading. The pile is growing quickly. ;)
