*Mary*

I know doctors hate when patients Google and attempt to self diagnose, but I think I have an issue with my ulnar nerve in my left arm.

My left pinky and ring finger have been numb and tingly for a week now and the numbness and tingly feeling goes down the side of my hand to my wrist.  My grip seems weaker than usual at times, but not always and it's definitely worse when my elbow is bent.  It's not painful just annoying and uncomfortable.  My whole pinky finger literally feels numb as I type this and it makes typing difficult.  I have a physical in 2 weeks with my regular physician and I plan on bringing it up to her, but is there anything I can try in the meantime for relief?  I always pick Mariela up with my left arm, so I've been trying to carry her on my right side which is awkward for me.  I'm going to contact our health center at work to have my desk set up for ergonomics which I never did when I joined the company to make sure my chair is the right height and everything.  TIA

Re: *Mary*

  • Sounds like an ulnar nerve issue. Do you tend to rest that arm/elbow on the table or other surface? SOmetimes that can compress the nerve and cause your symptoms. For now, use some heat on it in the evenings, and use an anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen, 200mg, 2-3 pills, 2-3 times per day. Sometimes it just gets inflamed and this can help bring it down.
  • Yes, I lean my elbow on my desk when editing photos at home and I caught myself doing it several times at work when I was there on Tuesday, too.  I'll try that and hopefully it'll help.  Thanks!

Butting in here, but i was having similar issues a while ago - it was worst when I woke up in the morning - I found I could NOT straighten my pinkie out! It would be in this weird claw thing and then just snap out straight. It was so weird! I asked my mom and she said to make sure not to lean on the elbow and to try to sleep with it straight not bent. I did both things and it went away.

Thanks, Claire.  I did read that keeping it straight at night would probably help it.  I keep trying to do it without wrapping it and it's pointless.  I need to just wrap it with an ace tonight.  Mariela doesn't help as I always cuddle her in bed on that side b/c that's where she is if she comes into bed with us as she's in the middle of our bed.  This morning she came in around 5:30 and wanted to snuggle and I tried to keep my arm out of it, but couldn't.  She ended up with her head lying on my left arm and I immediately felt my hand get numb.  It sucked!
