Help hunting down unknown smells

We have had two smells that won't go away for a couple of days now. One seems to originate in the kitchen and smells like sour milk. Sometimes it smells like it's near the pantry, other times it smells like it's near the fridge... but when you get to either of them there's no indication that there's anything causing the smell and it's driving me nuts!

There's also a smell coming from the Window A/C Unit but I have NO idea what kind of smell it is, it's nothing I've ever smelled before. We've tried turning it on to Vent mode, and fresh air mode, but neither have accomplished anything.

Any ideas for trying to hunt down an unknown stench?

Re: Help hunting down unknown smells

  • Have you moved the fridge and cleaned underneath it? Perhaps something spilled under it, and it smells when the compressor kicks on and heats up.

There should be a filter in your AC unit that can be washed by hand. If you take off the front of the unit, you should see a sort of spongy looking filter that can be washed in warm, soapy water with a bit of bleach, dried completely, and reinstalled.

  • Definately move appliances and clean underneath them. Also the smell by your ac could be mold possible. If there was condensation by it the wetness could have caused it to mold.
  • Thanks for the comments.

They cleaned under and behind the fridge before they moved. It's very clean. Last night my mom came over and helped me empty the fridge and clean the entire thing with 1:1 water and vinegar. This morning, the smell is still there. I can't figure it out and it's driving me crazy! I also put an open box of baking soda in the fridge to help deal with the smell

If anyone has any more ideas I'd appreciate them. My mom said that it smells (to her) like rotten eggs.

  • My parents had this rotten smell comming from their fridge too. It ended up being a tray that catches liquids that are spilled. I guess it is under the fridge. Not sure where or if it is on all fridges. Worth a shot! Maybe take the kick-plate off and see if there is one....
