Passport Name Change Question

I know this gets asked all the time, so I am sorry in advance.

I looked on the travel.state.gov website to get info on how to change my name on my passport, so I think I know what to do. But I had a few questions for people who have done this.

1. How long did it take to get your new passport.

2. Did you get your old one back? (I really want mine)

3. Do you get your marriage license you sent in back?

TIA!

Re: Passport Name Change Question

  • I went to the service center in my county with my old passport and marriage certificate so I didn't have to send it in. I think it took about 3-4 weeks to get the new one (this was back in 2009).

  • I went to the local license center (just check that where ever you are going does passports and takes a picture if you need one).  FYI: for my SS card name change, I had to go to the Mpls location since that service had moved to only a few spots.  Check before going so you don't wait for two hour to find out you are in the wrong place.

We got married Oct 24th and went on our honeymoon Nov 18th.  I went to the license center the Monday after our wedding and had it back no problem.  I did mention to the person, though, that I needed it for my honeymoon, but I didn't see a rush notice on anything.

You get your old one back and your original marriage license.

edit: we also talked with our travel person and he mentioned that you could just book a trip under your maiden name and use your current passport if you felt rushed getting the new one.  I brought it along just in case.

  • I did mine at the downtown Mpls post office.  I had to mail an original copy of my marriage certificate aswell as my old passport.  I got both back, but not in the same envelope which gave me a heart attack!!  My new passport took a good 4 weeks or so to get.

This! I also had a heart attack when the passport and marriage license were not returned together! I got the new passport first, and after calling the State department, the advised me that the license and passport are returned separately. Got the marriage license back a couple days later.
