traffic/driving question

if you are stopped at a red light, waiting to make a left hand turn across traffic, and a cop or fire truck comes up behind you with sirens on (they need to make the turn), what are you supposed to do?

Re: traffic/driving question

  • If they can't get around you, then I think you are supposed to do whatever you have to in order to get out of the way safely.  After I see traffic stopped, I pull out into the intersection and move so they can pass.  As soon as they have passed, I follow to get out of the intersection.  Although, if someone else can make a right hand turn in order to get out of the way... that is what they are supposed to do.  Doesn't always happen that way.  If the emergency vehicle pulls directly behind you with sirens going, then they expect that is their only option and it is time to move.  Everyone (all four ways) should stop.

  • You are not allowed to do anything illegal just because a fire truck is behind you. The fire truck has the authority to run a red light, but you do not. However, a police officer has the authority to direct you to go against the traffic signal.

  • I was at the intersection of Fry Road and I-10 last year when an ambulance and 2 cop cars came up behind us.  We were at the stop light waiting to turn left onto Fry.  There was a car in front of us and we were second in line.  The ambulance was one car behind us and then the two cops behind him.  No one moved.  All of a sudden a cop comes running up and is frantically signaling to the guy in front of me.  He was screaming and yelling at the first car threatening to "take him in"... "Don't you know the traffic laws"... "You have to get out of the way when you see sirens behind you". "MOVE, MOVE, MOVE!"  The first car moved out into the intersection and we followed.  The cop was already back in his car at that point and they all took off.  The three of us were left sitting in the intersection so of course we had to continue through the red light.

I guess you can get in trouble either way... if you run the light or if you just sit.  When I've been in that situation I usually run the light if I can because I certainly wouldn't want someone to die.  I think the people in the right lane are supposed to turn so the vehicle can use that lane.  You are right... it's not very clear what we are supposed to do according to the law.
