my horrible day yesterday

I hope none of you will judge and say I must get rid of them but I had a little run in with my dogs yesterday

so when we feed Bre and try n burp her she gets upset when you take away the bottle and she starts to cry (normally the dogs dont even budge when she cries) so i was feeding her like normal and was getting ready to burp her and she started to cry, well the dogs started to freak out (not sure why exactly-I dont know if maybe it was a different cry to them) so I picked her up and turned so they wouldnt harm the baby and the one nipped me in the behind and my upper thigh in the back so i kicked them off and put the baby down and then they realized they did something wrong and were trying to kiss/lick me cause I was crying...once things calmed down they were both so sad/upset and just kept coming and sitting at my feet and giving me those puppy eyes...so my husband and I were talking and we dont want to get rid of them yet because they WERE protecting the baby, they were BOTH very happy dogs the rest of the day tails wagging, playing with toys and normal  (on a side note my best friend was dating this guy and she was going to get on the bed and his dog(which was a mutt) freaked out and bit her in the nose- so I am NOT saying it's breed specific) however, we are monitoring them closely and if they show ANY sign of aggression they are gone.

today they are back to normal and just being lazy dogs- and sleeping away and playing with toys and being the loving dogs we always had .

what kind of scares me and ive discussed this with my husband that I just dont want them to freak on someone else or even the baby but he said neither of them were still freaking the rest of the night and growling at anyone so as I said previously were just going to monitor them and pray nothing like that happens again - sorry this is so long

Re: my horrible day yesterday

  • oh my goodness that is really scary I'm sorry that happened.  Thank God the baby was kept safe though.

It's good to know they are protective of her, but sometimes dogs scare me because they can do unexpected things out of the blue.  Hopefully that was just a one time thing and won't happen again.

  • exactly so that's why were just keeping an extra eye on both of them and it's so scary ANY dog can just snap over something so small cause they are both such happy lovable dogs

  • oh how scary im so sorry that happened! sometimes weird things can set dogs off, they are still animals and sometimes we can forget that. I'm glad your first thought is NOT to get rid of them. You should try some training techniques or see if you can get them to a behaviorist or something to try and work through it to see if they have any idea what could have set them off or what you could do to prevent that kind of thing for happening in the future.

  • im not sure if it was anything to even do with the baby just happened when i was feeding her, there are times she cries so hard shes screaming and they dont budge, but like my husband said its not like they were mean/aggressive the rest of the day so we cant just give them up, so we may have to do that!

  • I think like you said- any dog can snap and many times we don't know what triggers it. Something could have possibly happened- dog's paw was pinched, tail stepped on, etc that made them react so out of character. Also, all of this is still new to them, so they might be settling in the way that they know how, which might be different from how you want them to behave and react.

If it were me, I wouldn't be too concerned but would take this as a sign that maybe more needs to be done so that the dogs know exactly how they are supposed to act/react around you and the baby. Treats when they move out of your way when you pick her up, praise for what they do right, etc. And when someone new is over and with the baby, you can ask them to give the dogs treats while they are holding her. The pets board might also have some advice.

ive definatly been doing this today- letting her know dont get close to he baby and when she does something good when she gets told! it's just so hard to judge but just keeping an EXTRA eye on both of them. I was talking with my husband and she was sleeping before she did it so she may have gotten startled and just saw me first and when I picked up Bre and turned quickly she reacted
