Rain + Doggies

For those out there with pups or doggies:

What do you do with them exercise-wise when it's raining like this and they can't be walked?

To add to that, what do you usually do in the winter?  We adopted our dog at the end of April so all the snow was gone by then . . .

Re: Rain + Doggies

  • A couple of days inside isn't going to do much to your dog if it can't go outside. My dog was hyper last night and DH and I spent about 2 hours on the floor playing with him so he could get some of that energy out.

In the winter, we still take our dog on walks. We also have a fenced in yard and our dog loves the winter. He could stay outside all day long if we allowed him. So we let him out just enough to get a little exercise in and to do his business and he's back inside. Do you have any friends with dogs? We try to get our dog together with some friends dogs so they can interact and blow off some steam.

There is a doggy play group that we used to go to in Livonia. I cannot for the life of me remember what it's called, but it's on 5 Mile just past Inkster (I think). They have an indoor play area.

  • Our dog is almost human I think, when it rains we have to force him to go outside, he hates getting wet and on mornings like today I have to force him to get up.. So we do nothing, we play catch in the house with a tennis ball or tug of war with one of his toys..

But the snow is another story, he LOVES playing in the snow, he could be outside all day if we let him. We try and play catch with him and he loves digging his nose in the snow trying to find the ball. Or if it's actually snowing he will run in circles around the garage trying to eat the snow.

Sorry I realize none of that probably helps! Hah, hopefully your dog will love the snow!!!

  • Loki hates the rain, but we are not sure about the snow yet, but judging on how he behaves when the weather dips below 50, I'm banking on the fact that he will not be a fan . . .

We are sort of avoiding and doggie play area/parks where dogs are off leash.  Loki got bit pretty badly in a dog park in the beginning of summer, so we are waiting until we do more doggie training. . .

We do have friends with dogs who Loki has met and played with so I think we will try that route!  Thanks for the advice!

Yep, that's Loki alright . . he gets all excited to go out, but once the rain hits him, he's whine-y and wants to go back inside!

  • Our dogs hate getting wet too, but we have a deck they go under and a huge shady tree that blocks a lot of the rain. Luckily we have a fenced in yard so we just kind of push them out there and they will run around and play. As long as it's not pouring, then they'll do their business and run back inside!

They actually love the show though, they will play and roll around in it. And we have schnauzers which have long fur on their legs and stomachs, so we'll have to pick out the snow and ice chunks once they get inside!

  • We walk in the rain. We walk in Pet Smart, when it is really bad and we need a change of pace. We have a play date and just know that the dogs are going to run around like crazy. I know of a few day camps for dogs, some are not bad if you really need to get energy out, and it is to cold or ice or wet to get out with the dog. Good Luck.
  • When it rains all day we end up just having a lazy day. As long as it's not a whole week he tolerates it fine. He hates the rain and won't go outside.

Winter time however is his favorite - he will lay outside in the snow pile, rolls around, even sticks his whole face in the snow. He loves snow/cool weather. We typically have to call him inside in the fall/winter because he'll stay outside for hours if we let him.

Summer time he prefers to lay inside in front of the vent  with the a/c blowing lol.

  • Cody hates the rain too... today I just looked outside and yelled "squirrel!" and he went running outside.  That is the only way to get him out there running.  Other than that, we tend to chase him around the couches, he goes at full speed so it doesn't take much to wear him out.

As for winter, he HATES the snow.  He acts like a little diva and DH has to shoved a path to the grass and actually shovel the grass because he won't do his business unless he touches grass.  Then if he has to step in snow, he picks up his paws and gives us sad eyes like it is the worst thing in the world.  So in the winter, we try and take him to doggy day care every other week and then just play with him in the house.  Diva refuses to go for walks.  He doesn't make it off the front porch.

LOL!  yes I'm familiar with the sad eyes.  that's what we get when it's a downpour and Loki has to go out and do his business.  He gives us the sad eyes and whines to be let in!

  • Nelly (our big dog) hates the rain too, not that Seamus is a fan. We usually have to push her out the door to go potty. She will hold it forever if given the opportunity. However, if we pull out the leash, Nelly is all over it. Once upon a time, we had a raincoat for her & that made her even happier.

I used to walk her in the snow. She LOVES winter. She likes to eat the snow, and it's like super fuel for her. There is paw puddy stuff to protect the snow from building up but I can't remember the name...I have it at home.

He's a handsome guy! Congrats on your new family member! What kind of dog is he?

Thank you!  He's an American Bulldog/Pitbull mix.  We adopted him from the Buster Foundation.
