Random thought for the day: Is 'hanged' a word?

I keep reading stories about this RHWOBH 'stars' DH who HUNG himself.  It's HUNG, right?  They keep saying he "Hanged" himself and I think that sounds stupid.  Shouldn't it be he hung himself?

That's all.  carry on.

Re: Random thought for the day: Is 'hanged' a word?

  • I think it actually is hanged in that case...not sure why, but yes it sounds extremely stupid!

  • Pictures can be hung, but people are always hanged. It?s an odd quirk of the English language. Here is a usage note on the word ?hang? from the American Heritage Dictionary:

Hanged, as a past tense and a past participle of hang, is used in the sense of ?to put to death by hanging,? as in Frontier courts hanged many a prisoner after a summary trial. A majority of the Usage Panel objects to hung used in this sense. In all other senses of the word, hung is the preferred form as past tense and past participle, as in I hung my child?s picture above my desk.

  • Nope, it's hanged.  Hung is incorrect.

  • Ditto the others.  Damn English language!

I always have trouble with the word "lay."  Like, do I lay or lie down or I am laying or lying down?  I know I've learned this multiple times, but I can never remember and it bugs me!  There's my random thought for the day.  :)
