Breastfeeding - when is it time to stop

So, my neighbor is still breastfeeding her 14mth old and it freaks me out when I see it.  Normally, I have no problem, but to see a kid the same size as A hooked to a boob, just isn't right..lol. So, when do you think it is time to stop?

  • LOL I thought this was for you!! :)

LMBO!  Sorry about that Kel.  I guess I should have worded that subject differently.  If my girls wouldn't have crapped out on me (the pump was fine until I nursed A and then they didn't like the pump any longer) I would have still breastfed her until prob 8 -10 mths.

  • I breastfed Jake until he was 16 months, I would have liked to have continued a bit longer but my OB wanted me to stop when I got to 20 weeks in my pregnancy. I plan to breastfeed Audrey as long as we both want to or until she turns 2. For me, age 2 is the right time to stop, it's going to be different for everyone.
  • before reality set in, i really wanted to go at least a year so i guess i really don't see anything wrong woth 14 months.

  • My goal is to make it to around a year.  I know if you breastfeed, they recommend doing so until about a year old.  Most of my friends stopped after about a year, so 14 months isn't too bad.  I will have to go until we can get her to drink from a cup at least because she won't take a bottle.  We have tried everything possible, and she still refuses.  Good thing my teaching position is part time...

  • I am hoping I can breastfeed this time around, and if I can I plan on breastfeeding or giving breastmilk to Harry as long as I can, or until 2.  As long as both child and mother are willing to nurse then I see no reason to stop.

  • I don't have a problem with extended bf, but I had supply issues so I pump. I plan to keep pumping through the end of the year so she will be around 15 months when I stop.

  • For me 12 months and then we switched to Milk for #1, #2 I stopped sooner, .. This is non related, but I did pump a while while working but that became difficult so then I started to do formula in the day and bf at night.. Crazy that your body can adjust like that.

  • I know everyone is different and to each their own, but for me, I'm just not comfortable with it. Here LO, eat your chicken and then right after here is a boob for you to drink from instead of a cup... I guess I just can't process that. Oh well.

It wasn't like that for us at all. Even before he was a year old Jake really only nursed at nap time and bedtime, he got a sippy cup with his meals.

  • I'm way late on this, but I nursed Brody till 14 1/2 months and would've went up to 2. The only reason I stopped was I started losing my supply and it wasn't enough for him. I had terrible guilt over it, I wanted to keep him on bm cause it was better for him and his disease. Part of me wonders if i wouldve kept nursing if he wouldve stayed out of the hospital more.

  • I would stop actually BFing at 12 months, but keep pumping until baby refused the milk or around 18 months. I think at 12 months they should be using a cup. I didn't give the girls bottles at all after they hit their first birthday so I'd do the same with BFing. That's just me though.

    I definitely see your point.

  • To each their own.  I do find it a little odd when people are BF'ing kids 2 and over though, but that is my personal opinion.  After 12 months is there really much benefit to the breastmilk??  I'm not an expert, but I don't think there is and I think many times it is just a comfort thing for the kid.

I look at it this way.  I tried my dardenst (sp) to get Davis off a bottle at 1 year, now he didn't drink formula from it, he was having regular milk or water.  But he wasn't good with a sippy yet and he had to drink so I didn't get him off a bottle till 14 months so I guess I view breastfeeding longer as the same way.  If your kid won't drink from a cup yet, how else are they gonna drink, right??

It is still beneficial to their immune system. You still pass along your anti-bodies with extended bf... which is why I am going to try to pump through the end of the year. Since we will be around a lot of people at the holidays I am hoping it will help to keep her healthy.

  • Whew.. sorry, I didn't mean to "stir the pot" and hopefully everyone is ok with everyone one having different opinions on this.  If nothing else, it brought the board back to life for at least a little while :-)

the important thing: you brought a little life to the board. i guess we need the occasional 'controversial' subject around here.
