babies, Tylenol & shots

I've heard advice both for and against giving Tylenol before he gets his vaccination shots.  Apparently, the argument against giving it is that it can mess with the effectiveness of some vaccines...?  We have his 4-month series tomorrow.

What do you do?

Re: babies, Tylenol & shots

  • I'm sure it depends on the kid, but we never bothered with pain meds before or after and James was always fine. He got boob right after shots to help soothe the initial pain, but sometimes he even didn't want that and was fine after 10-60 seconds.

  • T just got a good ol hug.  Pedi said no need for meds since they can't tell if she has/had a reaction to the immunization if she is medicated.

  • I never gave meds before or after either.  Like Erika I had a boob ready to pop in his mouth immediately, and he was usually fine within a minute.  With one set of shots, maybe that same 4 month set, I noticed he was extra sleepy after, but not cranky or in pain, so I don't think I ever had to give him meds after either.  I would see how he does without meds this first time and go from there.

  • ditto to everyone else.  sometimes i've given Owen Tylenol after, but only when he was super-fussy.  with both of my kids, the shots seem to put them to sleep.

  • thanks.  Colby screamed immediately after his 2 month shots, but seemed fine after - with some soothing booby milk.  Big Smile

DH's sis mentioned giving it before, so now that's what he wants to do - and he's bringing Munchkin to meet me at the appointment, since I'll be coming from work.  Thanks for helping me convince him it's not necessary!

You could always call and see what the doctor recommends too.  Mine recommended against giving it before and not after unless really necessary.  Maybe that would help him feel better about it.

  • Only once did we give it after - she had a fever after her 2 month. But not before since they're now saying it can interfere with the shot effectiveness.
