thank you notes/e-mails?

How quickly do I send those out? If I have an interview tomorrow, is sending it that afternoon too soon?  Or should I wait until the evening so it doesn't seem overeager/desperate?

I have usually waited until that evening or the morning after, but always within 24-hours.  Is that appropriate?

I swim because I'm too damned sexy for a sport that requires real clothing.

Re: thank you notes/e-mails?

  • That afternoon is fine. My rule of thumb is enough time to compose a message with something specific that you discussed with each person.

    The sooner the better.

  • If you're sending an email, I'm actually a fan of waiting until the next day. The day you interview, you're already obviously on their mind. It's nice to give them a reminder of you the day following as well.

  • I say the sooner the better. I have actually had interviews where they were making a decision that day, a Friday, or early the following week.

As long as it's thoughtful and addresses your interview in some way, I say afternoon is fine.

  • I will say what no to do is leave the interview, sit out in the courtyard that is visible to the interviewers, write your thank you notes, then walk back in and hand them to the receptionist to distribute. I know you wouldn't do this., but this happened with someone we interviewed. It was totally WEIRD.
