Acceptable time frame to consider an offer?

Just curious since it's been a while since I've gone through this-

If an offer is extended during a face-to-face meeting, is it acceptable to:

  • ask for a day to consider it (I'd like time to discuss with my DH,etc.);
  • ask for details regarding the benefits package (i.e. employee costs for health care);

Also, if I want to counter, is that done in writing or verbally?

Thanks!

Re: Acceptable time frame to consider an offer?

  • At least a day is acceptable, but I wouldn't say it's so I could discuss it with DH. I'd just say I needed time to look over a written offer.

    I would definitely ask for a benefits package along with it. They're often included anyway.

    I countered verbally, but asked for written confirmation of the finall #.

    Exactly- I knew I didn't want to say it was so I could discuss with DH but wasn't sure how to say I needed time- thanks!

  • Just say, "I'd like a few days to look over the offer. Can I get back to you Tuesday?"
