Tips for staying motivated?

I've been unemployed since mid May and as much as I have been enjoying being home, I feel like I've lost the motivation to do much during the day when my husband is at work. I feel like I'm letting cleaning slip a lot of the time and I can never get the energy to work on projects I've wanted to do for months. I am looking for work casually, but I very much want to stay home in the long run. Anyone have tips on keeping myself motivated throughout the day to get what I need to get done, DONE!?

Re: Tips for staying motivated?

  • I'm a list person, and generally super motivated right away in the morning and then it dwindles from there.  Try making a list of everything that you NEED to achieve today.  Post that list somewhere (I find on the fridge helps most) and check things off as you go. Have a lunch time check in and a mid afternoon check in (4pm) and see what you have left to do that day. If there is something that didn't get done, reschedule it so that it does get done (say you didn't pick up DH's dry cleaning today because it was raining cats and dos, reschedule it to tomorrow)

I also thinks it helps to have the list on a pretty piece of paper and nicely written vs a scribbled on post-it note.

  • I have a cleaning list that's laminated.  I have tasks that are done daily and tasks that are done on specific days.  I get great satisfaction checking the tasks off, it lets me see how much I've gotten accomplished that day, plus it's easier to have specific things that need to get done each day as opposed to just a huge list of things to be done in general.
  • Definitely second the list.  Checking things off the list makes me feel like I've actually accomplished something.

I also try to remember that this is MY job. My DH goes out and works 40+ hours a week and the least I can do is hold up my end and get my "40+ hour" job done. There is always so much to be done.  I do try to get the majority of my house work done during the day so when DH comes I just spend time with him. We don't have kids yet so I'm sure this will be harder once they get here, but for now this is my rule of thumb.

  • Aussie - Care to share your format?  I generally do whatever needs to be done the most when I get off work but would like to have a set list.
