Plans...poll sort of

So last night before I fell asleep I got to thinking about Sushi's question about 5 year plans. It made me think about all the different places and things I thought I would be doing when I "grew" up. So I wanted to ask all of you

When you were 5-11 what did you want to be?

When you were a bit older say 12-15?

When you were finishing high school?

Re: Plans...poll sort of

  • When I was a kid, I wanted to be a teacher... mainly because (1) my mom was a teacher, and (2) the teachers had the answer keys lol.

By 12-15 I wanted to be a computer engineer. I had overheard my mom telling a friend that she knew a girl who was super smart and studying computer engineering, and I thought, "Well, I'M smart so I'm going to do that too!"

Throughout HS I did all the research about engineering and decided that's what I was going to do, but I left high school not knowing exactly what type of engineering I wanted to do. The program I initially chose for undergrad actually allowed me to delay picking a specialty until third year. It's a good thing because I never expected to end up an industrial engineer.

  • From about 5 to 11, I was set on being a lawyer. I remember that when I was 10, someone asked my cousin (older by a year) what she wanted to be right after I had said I wanted to be a lawyer. She goes, "Um . . . lawyer?" She's now a lawyer, and a pretty damn good one from what I hear.

From 12 - 15, it was doctor. I became obsessed with genetics, and just thought that meant I needed to go into medicine (not realizing that, duh, I could do research instead). This actually lasted until I took chemistry in college and thought uh, no.

After that I bounced from computer engineering to Latino studies to finally medieval/Renaissance English literature. Funny thing is, I am using the med/Ren stuff a lot lately (which makes me pretty happy).

  • When you were 5-11 what did you want to be?

I really wanted to be an animator for Disney. My room was filled with Disney things. I thought that one day my home would be filled with Disney things.

When you were a bit older say 12-15?

I wanted to be a make up artist for movies.

When you were finishing high school?

I wanted to do set design for movies.  I guess I didn't move to far away from it doing interior design.

  • When you were 5-11 what did you want to be? I wanted to be a vet.  I loved the idea of working with and helping animals.  Then I grew up and realized I was too squeemish to do that job and I wouldn't have been able to handle the animals dieing (and esp having to put them down).

When you were a bit older say 12-15? I think I wanted to be an accountant at this point.  I liked working with numbers and with money.

When you were finishing high school? I went through a few iterations.  Right up until the end of school, I was leaning towards being a statistician, and was even accepted to college and sent off a deposit.  Then something clicked and I did a complete 180, decided to switch schools and get a business degree instead, in finance.  I still wasn't sure what I wanted to do with that, but I knew I didn't want to do stats for the rest of my life.

  • When I was five to elevenish, I wanted to be a marine biologist.

I'm not sure when exactly I switched, but by the time I was finishing high school, I wanted to teach middle school science.  I had the best science teacher in middle school.  That is what I got my undergrad degree in.

Sometime after that, I decided that what I really wanted to do was forensics, but I don't have the time or money to put into another 8 years of school/training.  I'll have to be content reading about it.

  • Sushi* apparently we think alike.

I wanted to be a vet up until sophmore year of high school. I loved animals and kept trying to take them in off the streets. My parents weren't thrilled. Then I decided I really just wanted to play with them all the time and not so much have to see them hurt or watch them die. After dealing with Kirra dying this year, I'm glad I didn't choose this route. I would never be able to keep a straight face for anyone in my office having a sick animal. I'd constantly be crying and worrying everyone.

After that, I just knew I wanted to do something fancy that made decent money. I tend to spout off at the mouth and argue with everyone, so lawyer it was. I'm not doing anything with my degree and licensing yet, but hopefully some day when people are hiring around here. I'm tempted to go back for my licensing in psych, but DH still isn't thrilled with the idea. We'll see.

  • When you were 5-11 what did you want to be?

I think the question then is what didn't I want to be!

When you were a bit older say 12-15?

I went through a few stages - I wanted to be a German teacher, then I wanted to be a forensic pathologist.

When you were finishing high school?

I was torn - I really wanted to be a forensic pathologist but I was a total news hound so I was entertaining journalism. I really wanted to be on the nightly news.

I completed 1/2 the courses required for a criminal justice degree when I decided to switch to journalism.

I completed my journalism degree - actually became a reporter and it?s way less glamorous than it seems.

  • When you were 5-11 what did you want to be? At this age, I definitely wanted to be a doctor.  I wasn't until I got older that I realized that I wouldn't be able to do that and faint at the sight of blood.

When you were a bit older say 12-15? An interior designer.  I had to do a report in 5th grade comparing colleges for my intended career, so I chose interior design and compared RISD, University of Vermont, and Dartmouth.  I think by then the east coast school seed was planted.

When you were finishing high school? You ladies are going to laugh.  I actually applied to colleges thinking I was going to major in astrophysics.  I was really into space sciences in high school and thought it would be amazing to work for NASA.  I was a total math and science geek back then.  If someone would have told me that one day I would become a lawyer, I would never have believed it.

You sound like my DH, he loves anything to do with science space, as well as flight. I think he too is surprised someways that he's a lawyer.

  • When you were 5-11 what did you want to be?

When I was that age I was convinced that I was going to be a Vet because I loved animals so much. I would of done it too if we had done job shadowing when I was in 8th grade. I job shadowed at my local vets office and got to play with some of the animals that were there for long term care. it was all good until the neddle came out and i passed out dead on the floor.

When you were a bit older say 12-15?

so I moved on and decided that I wanted to be a flight Attendent. I loved the idea of flying on planes for free, and serving people. I even got excepted into a collage out in california and my dad was all set to take me there. Until i freaked out three days before I was set to arrive and decided I could not go that far from my family and friends and be all alone.

Then when I was 20 and newly single from my last fiancee I decided I wanted to go into culinary arts to become a pastery chef. I wanted to open my own bakery. I even saved up to money to start going to school for it, but while working at WalMart I meet Joshua and well I couldn't bring myself to leave the state and him behind to get a degree for what I loved. So i used my savings and got my CENA and moved out on my own to experience my freedom.

long story short I married Joshua and still have what ifs about my dreams to open my own bakery

  • When I was 5-11 I also wanted to be a marine biologist. It combined my love of animals and my love of water/warm weather.

When I was 12-15 I wanted to be a stay at home mom. My mom was a SAHM and I always thought that I'd be married by 22 and have kids shortly after that. Now I'm 30 and married but have no kids and am not completely decided as to whether or not I want to have them.

When I was finishing HS, I planned to become an electrical engineer. I loved math and science and thought that naturally that meant that I should go into engineering. After a year in that program, I realized that engineering was not for me and transferred into the college of business. That has proven to be a much better fit. Although I actually really enjoyed my EE classes; I just hated physics and many of the other classes that came along with the major.

  • When you were 5-11 what did you want to be? I wanted to be a lawyer, a vet and an interior decorator.

When you were a bit older say 12-15? At 12, I still thought I wanted to be a lawyer. At 15, I didn't know and I was freaked out about the thought of choosing one thing to do with the rest of my life.

When you were finishing high school? I wanted to be a paralegal to dip my toe into the water and see if I would like working in the legal field. It wasn't for me and I ended up majoring in Business.

  • I always wanted to be a social worker and work in the helping profession, I have jumped from want to work in DFS, to being a probation office to working with people who are elderly, to working with teens.   I am still trying to figure out exactly what I want to do, I am thinking I want to be LCSW (counselor).

  • When you were 5-11 what did you want to be?

At this age I actually wanted to be an actress. I watched My Girl a million times and was convinced I could also be a child star and avoid school altogether lol

When you were a bit older say 12-15?

A psychologist. I wanted to be able to help people and I enjoyed listening to my friends' problems.

When you were finishing high school?

Everything! I had ideas to be a wedding planner, a choreographer, a vet, and a nurse all within my senior year. I hated the fact that I had to pick only one thing to do with the rest of my life. I actually still hate that because there is so much I think I could be good at and would want to do.
