On ML a couple of them are talking about how they're nervous because the terror level is elevated. Also, they're sad, pissed, or whatever at the tragedy whoring. What do you think? Are you nervous about another terror attack on Sunday? Are you going to attend any remembrance services? How do you feel about the sound bytes, clips and coverage of the tower footage?
Re: 9/11 anniversary
1) I'm not nervous about any extra terrorist activity
2) I don't mind the documentaries (DH actually watched one last night) and obviously support the memorials, but that song they are talking about is god awful. It's extremely tragedy whore-ish. I just don't see the point in it. It was a terrible tragedy that is now a part of our nations history. The footage, the accounts of what happened from those who were there, sound clips, interviews....that's all fine & still makes me emotional. It's accurate. But playing some stupid song with voice overs from some girl pretending to have lost her dad on 9-11 is just sick. You don't have to TRY to make it any more devastating than it already was.
I don't think that's the main thing they're having a problem with. It's the extra stuff. Almost the "marketing of 9-11" if you will that they seem to be taking issue with. At least in the threads I've read that's been the case.
Oh ok. I don't really see it as "marketing," just more like "reminding." But then again I am REALLY patriotic and sentimental so I don't mind the coverage.....kind of one of those people that says it should be shown often so people don't forget.
Yeah. The biggest up roar I saw seemed to be over a song that really has no relevancy. I think the tributes and memorials are all very nice. Runner's Magazine has been covering runners and running related things that were affected by 9-11 and I bawled like a baby reading this story. I can't imagine how emotional it must be to run this race. http://www.tunneltotowersrun.org/stephens_legacy.aspx
ETA: That link doesn't explain everything. He was off shift and turned his truck around when he heard of the attack. Traffic was backed up so he strapped on his gear and ran through the tunnel, catching a ride with a truck on the other side. He died when the tower collapsed. The race covers the route he covered that day. When you come out of the tunnel there are 343 firefighters, each holding a picture of a firefighter who lost their life, lining the road. His wife ran it in 2008 wearing his firefighting jacket.
I'm a little nervous about something happening but really, that's a risk we have every year, or day for that matter. I didn't listen to the song posted on ML but I think there are enough true stories about the tragedy that people don't need to make up songs or stories for attention.

Exactly. I say state the facts. If survivors or family members want to tell their story, let them, but don't put some political spin on it to push your agenda or just to make people feel something more. Or mash up a bunch of sad songs just to get someone to feel even worse about it. I can remember without the reminders and mourn those that died without having to hear about it every 9.3 seconds.
Yes, this is tragedy whoring. Ditto clseale on the "marketing" of 9/11. I don't need to go to services, watch specials, etc. to remember what happened on 9/11. I don't necessarily disagree with any of them individually, but I think it's being exploited at this point.
No, I'm not nervous about a terrorism attack on Sunday anymore than any other day. I think we should always be aware of the possibility though.
I'm going to a remembrance service because there happens to be one at the Jags season opener.
