So, the house we just bought in Omaha needs an island in the kitchen. It's an older house, so I want to go relatively cheap for now, as I forsee a full kitchen remodel sometime in the distant future...I really want a butcher block, a little breakfast bar, and some cabinets....I saw this on Pinterest and I think it would be perfect...

So, I looked on CL for some buffet tables or dressers, and haven't really found anything great, so if anyone sees something around town, would you let me know? I'm going to check out some of the antique stores but I know they will be $$$...Or if anyone has anything like this to sell me, that would be great too! ![]()
Also, where in town would I get a big butcher block like this?
Can anyone think of a way to do this that would be even cheaper? We talked about finding someone that has bottom cabinets from a kitchen remodel or something, but I'm worried it might look weird since they wouldn't match the cabinets identically. I feel like with this, if the buffet I find is pretty ornate looking like this one, then it won't really matter that it doesn't match exactly, KWIM?
Re: kitchen island questions...
My sister and BIL did this in their house in KC. She had an old buffet that they used, and then the went to the Habitat Restore in KC and got a huge slab of marble for like $25 and put in on top. Not sure where you would get the butchers block...but we have a habitat restore here, but I think you pretty much have to stalk the place on a daily basis to see if anything good comes in.
Have you checked the Habitat for Humanity Re-store? I bet you could find cabinets there and build them up yourself.
Dan watched an episode of Woodworkers or This Old House or one of those PBS shows recently and they made their own butcher block counter. I'm not sure that would be cheaper OR easy for a DIYer but it's an option too.
love is for every her, love is for every him, love is for everyone
I wouldn't even try to match your existing cabinets. I love the look of center islands that are painted completely different than the rest of the kitchen.
I would watch for estate sales. If you are going to paint and add a counter top too it, you can hide many blemishes that would make other pass over the piece.
we had a similar need. got something similar to this at Lowe's except it is white, and has a marble removable inset cutting board. It was inexpensive. I read the review of this. We've had ours for 4 years and it has held up very well.
