I have a question about clutter at an open house...

I'm emptying out my closets, cupboards, cabinets, etc, but what about furniture, like my bureau, or my computer desk?  I can't imagine anyone would look in there, but will they?  Should I empty those out, too?

Re: I have a question about clutter at an open house...

  • I'd empty out anything you didn't want people to see, or that someone might steal.

People suck, and while I would never open a drawer during an open house (or anytime I was in a stranger's house), I wouldn't track mud through a house, make dirty hand prints on the walls, poop in the toilet and not flush it all the way, or soak the guest towels in the powder room.  Yet, I had people do all these things in my house and I wouldn't put it past someone to start opening drawers.
  • Your house isn't NOT going to sell because your sock drawer is a mess.  Use your judgment.

But pp's advice to hide those things you don't want ruined or stolen is good.

  • Counter tops & other surfaces are far more important. Removing furniture is also far more important than removing what is inside the furniture. You want a clean and tidy space but drawers or bureaus that can be closed are less important. Do keep in mind that, particularly in these hard times, identity theft is on the rise so try to protect your information (don't leave mail etc with your name on it sitting around or easily accessible).

Keep up the great work! Good luck!

  • If someone is looking in your desk drawers, that's not someone you want to be attempting to sell your house to anyway.  That would show dishonesty.  Looking in cupboards/vanities makes sense because you're buying those.  They aren't buying the desk, dresser, etc.

Take pp's advice and remove the stuff you don't want people to see or steal and if you're worried about your dresser drawers being cluttered, I would just cover up the contents with a towel or pillowcase and tuck it in at the edges.

  • Yes, anything with sensitive information on it is locked up, or shred.

    Thanks!

  • I can't imagine why looking in someone's personal furniture drawers would be necessary. I did however look in all of the closets, in cupboards, in the refridgerator and appliances that were being left behind, etc... The sellers master bedroom drawers were really filthy and gross but I wanted to see the size. Luckily for them I can overlook that type of thing ;)
