Construction differences?

As I sit here with construction crews all over our neighborhood and making our house rumble. Here they build the buildings first, sewage lines and roads second. This means we live in a residential area that is full of houses, some of them more than ten years old, and are just now getting all the houses off septic and tied to city sewage. This doesn't mean that actual pavement is right behind but in our case it looks to be that way.

So, what about your area? Which comes first - the buildings or the planning?

Re: Construction differences?

  • Planning! The houses already take a year or more and are built one or 2 at a time.

  • It depends.  Our new house is being built with a few others in a surprise building lot in the middle of homes that have been there forever- like from the 1600s.  If it is an entire neighborhood that is newly opened for building, then the planning happens before the building.

  • Forgot to add though, that in our new area, they did all the planning first, we got sewers and roads before they started building.  Septic is not allowed in our area anyway, so you have to connect any new houses immediately to the sewers.

  • Around here there is very little new construction. When they do build a house it is always on a road from what I've seen, but often the driveway etc. is done last. Most cities have zoning rules you have to clear anyways so you can't really get away with "build first, then plan."
