Homemade baby food question

I am going to make some sweet potatoe and squash this weekend.  We have done rice and introduced some natural applesauce so figured I better get to the veggies...  was there a certain squash variety you normally went with (acorn, butternut).  Also for those who amde their own babyfood what kids of fruits did you do.  I looked at wholesomebaby's site and it seems that some fruits froze better than others.  I  only did a couple when Blake was little and wanted to do a few more this time around...I don't plan to introduce anymore fruits to Kenendy right now but with fruit still in season I wanted to make some and freeze it to use in a few months

Re: Homemade baby food question

  • We always used butternut squash b/c it was what my parents grew. I think acorn would be fine though too.

For fruit, we did apples, peaches, banana (fresh, not frozen), mango, pears.  We didn't introduce many others until he was eating finger foods.

  • Thanks...I had peaches and pears on my list for frozen but will look at mangos too - hadn't thought of that-
  • I used both acorn and butternut.  Butternut yeilds more per squash if that matters to you.  Acorn are really hallow in the middle.

I used a ton of mango when they were little, but they really didn't care for it plain.  Mango has a pretty strong flavor (and purees up very thin), so I always mixed it with yogurt or applesause when serving.

  • I bought frozen yellow squash and used it.  Sweet potatoes are really easy.  Just bake them up and puree them.

I've done apples, you just boil them.  Pears I just bought canned that is no sugar and 100% juice.  Peaches I bought frozen.  Bananas I do fresh.

Also when you get to meats, you can buy ground turkey and chicken at Target.  Brown it and puree it.  I add water to thin it, and I also add some prunes since rice seems to make Mason constipated.

Actually, most things I bought frozen and then steamed them.

  • Thanks for the feedback girls!
