My Nordstrom interview went well but...

I interviewed at Nordstrom today for a sales job in accessories.  Everything went great until the hiring manager told my the salary of $9/hour plus 4% commission.

After my years of experience at good paying retail jobs this came as a disappointment. Also, with Nordstrom's reputation as 1 of Fortune Magazine's top 100 companies to work for, the wage was a let down.  It's full time with good benefits: medical, prescription, dental and vision.  The commute is 30 minutes one way.

Maybe this is the way retail is going even though the hiring manager said that the company is doing very well. What do you ladies think? TIA!

Re: My Nordstrom interview went well but...

  • Is the commission rate good? I would hate to be on a commission job and would never want to get paid $9/hr. Maybe that is the going rate but if you are were already making more I wouldn't settle for that.
  • My friend worked pt at Nordstorms last holiday season and made more there (w/the commission) than at her 9-5 desk job.

At a store like Nordstroms the commission adds up quickly. Is there a way you might be able to transfer to a department that has higher end merchandise? She worked in lingerie and did very well.

  • If it helps your decision... I work for the insurance company who Nordstrom has their medical benefits through... and they are good benefits.  No copays and a low deductible (much lower than my own, and I work for the insurance company!)

  • i have heard they are one of the best retail companies to work for. Apple who is #1 pays their employees crap and really asks a lot of them. You will never walk by Apple and see someone sitting around and they really dont get paid well and it is hourly with no commish also their bennys blow. So it is all perspective.
  • The probem is the return policy.  You'll have a great day in sales, only to have a ton of stuff returned by the next paycheck.  That comes off your commission totals.

Other than that, I agree with pp. Great place to work, they treat their employees well, and the benefits are top notch.

Accessories would include all the handbags, right?  You could do well since they are quite pricey and sales add up quickly.

The shoe dept. has a higher commission rate, but you can't believe what people will wear and return.

  • I worked the accessories dept in college and almost always made more than my hourly rate. I was NOT a go-getter type of Nordstrom employee. Did not keep a "personal book", really didn't try to go out there and help customers (I was shy).

Accessories does not include handbags, but does include really expensive sunglasses :)
