need help w/ knit hat for a boy

I'm making a few of these for Christmas and I'll be adding fabric rosettes to the brims of the girls' hats, but I'm at a loss for the boys.  One is age 5 and the other is age 13.  They will be solid (no pattern/stripes) hats.  What could I add to the brim of the boys' hats, or should I just leave them plain?

I was thinking of adding a cluster of buttons, but that might be too much.  Any ideas?

TIA!

Re: need help w/ knit hat for a boy

  • Honestly, I would just leave them plain or just with one big button.  I'm certainly no expert when it comes to young boys, but anything more than really simple can come across as "cutesy."

At least that's what my DH says.  For someone who's incapable of shopping for himself, DH has some surprisingly strong opinions about clothing.  Confused

  • I wouldn't add anything to the 13yo's hat- something like a felt applique of a skull/crossbones might go over okay, but, plain is less likely to get the teen boy snub. The 5yo- you could do an applique of something he's into- or a decorative button or star patch or something along those lines.
  • amyinaustin?  That's a name I haven't seen in forever!  How are you?

  • I would leave them plain.
