Selling an iPhone 3G

Has anyone tried selling an old phone online before? I was thinking maybe CL, but my brother suggested Amazon because supposedly they have a program similar to their textbook buyback. I don't have an ebay account and I've heard the fees are kind of high when you sell an expensive item, so I'd probably rather stay away from that route.

I have a 2 year old AT&T iPhone 3GS - 16GB phone (in almost perfect condition). It still works like a charm, but my contract was recently up and I switched to a family plan with my DH and SIL on Verizon. So the phone is basically worthless to me and I want to sell.

Any suggestions?

Re: Selling an iPhone 3G

  • I am not sure where you should try to sell it but I wonder if it is worth your time and effort. You can buy a refurbished iPhone 3GS from AT&T for $50. If I was buying from a person I would expect to pay even less than the AT&T price. If you do decide it is worth it, sell it now. Rumor is the iPhone 5 will be announced and/or released next month. Given that Apple only supports the 2 most recent versions (with updates) I doubt you will get anything for it after that.
  • I disagree with pp.  Sure you can get them cheap, if you qualify for an upgrade.  If someone buys their phone and then drops it and breaks it a month later they're going to pay hundreds for a new one.
  • I sold both mine and my DH's on ebay.  Mine had a cracked LCD and sold for $200 (16GB), his was a 32GB and sold for $275.

Apple products hold their value.  I don't know if CL will garner the same amount of $$.

  • Thanks for the input - I think I'll see if I can talk my brother into selling it for me and giving him a percentage of the profits. He's a lot more proficient on ebay than I am and I'd really like to get the most out of it that I can. If nothing else, it can be used as an ipod touch with wi-fi minus the phone part.

This is what we did with DH's old 3G - its our son's ipod and we put all his baby music on there.
