We had a professional carpet cleaner come to our house this week and clean the carpet upstairs and a shag rug. The shag rug didn't dry properly and now it smells like mildew. Is there anything I can do?
I thought maybe I could put it out in the sun and the sun might kill the mildew? Its a $200 rug, so it really sucks to throw it away.

Re: is my rug ruined?

We have a few wool rugs, and our dealer has a cleaning service where we can bring the rugs in. He said the guys that do in-home cleaning would ruin our rugs because they use too much water or chemical or something. He said we should only take our rugs to places that sell/care for nice wool rugs. Independently, our remodeling contractor also told us he uses a service that uses no water because water would ruin rugs and carpets. His service uses some sort of carbon dioxide machine or something.
I've never had shag, so I wouldn't even know where to begin DIYing, but perhaps you could call a local rug dealer and see what they suggest? The manufacturer/seller might also have some advice.
